Day 8: Glow for @montereybayaquarium’s Deep Sea December
Abyssal Comb Jellies (Beroe abyssicola)
Acrylic ink, UV reactive fake blood, silver gel pen
Unlike in my painting, the bioluminescence that abyssal comb jellies exhibit doesn’t rely on UV light, likely because most UV light won’t reach the twilight and midnight zones that these comb jellies inhabit. Their photoprotein, berovin, reaches it’s active state based on just the presence of calcium ions [1].
✅ Beautiful abyssal comb jellies.
✅ Science fact with citation.
✅ “UV reactive fake blood.”
10/10.
