A physical, cartoonish drawing of two deep sea brittle stars against a zig zag background of orange and brown. One brittle star is about twice as large as the other. The drawing is clearly on a small scale, probably about an inch or two long.ALT

deep sea december day seventeen: star!

I just drew another sea star earlier this week, so i’m going with a different species for today! this is the deep sea brittle star, which i drew at such a tiny scale that I lost the first one I drew after I cut it out. it is still missing (you’re looking a replacement star), so if anyone finds a teeny tiny itty bitty drawing of a brittle star, please call 1-800-BRITTLE

@montereybayaquarium I found this species on your website! do you guys have a cool fact about brittle stars? I feel like you do, you seem like cool fact people

Did somebody say ‘cool fact about brittle stars’? ☝️🤓

There are over 2,000 known species of brittle star—more than any other group of sea stars!

They’re found widely distributed throughout the worlds oceans at massive depth ranges. You can spot spiny brittle stars here in the sandy shallows of Monterey Bay, while deep-sea brittle star species have been found on the seafloor at depths of nearly 10,000 feet (3,000 m)!
