In the business world we talk about adjacencies. Adjacent products are those that are somewhat related to the primary products made by a manufacturer. In this case, lighting and photography in the reefing hobby goes hand in hand. We strive to capture these successful reefing memories to share. The current trends in social media and various imaging platforms enable many to post so easily these days. Having the right tool is the key.
I recently received an unexpected package. It contained the Orphek Omini 70mm Magnetic Lens kit from our friends at Orphek Lighting.
Orphek is a lighting manufacturer. The specific lighting spectrums we utilize in the reef environment creates unique challenges with respect to photography. When taking photos in daylight it’s not much of a problem. But for the blue wavelengths that enhance the coral fluorescence “pop” these filters will balance the required tones for a better photo color rendition compared to just a washed out blue. As always, your camera settings will play a huge role on the final outcome and takes time to master. These lenses will aid in the compensating for the blue lighting.
I have primarily been using the smaller 52mm clip-on version on my Samsung Galaxy S23 phone for convenience. Though these lenses will fit on standard DSLR Cameras, I do not use my DSLR camera much these days. My primary use for the Omini lens kit is for magnifying port hole to inspect livestock.
There are many lens kits available but the Orpheks have been my “go to”. Give any of the 3 sizes (37mm, 52mm, 77mm) a try!
