Play a Game, Contribute to Science | Reef Builders

Do you like games? Do you like contributing to science? Well, do I have something for you! MBARI (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) has developed a mobile game that combines the love of ocean life with science.

FathomVerse is a free mobile game that’s comprised of mini-games where you interact with stunning ocean imagery. By playing the game, you’re helping researchers identify ocean animals and train AI with the goal of helping them identify animals that have yet to be discovered. Since anywhere from 30-60% of marine life is still unknown to science, the better the AI, the more effective identification will be.

FathomVerse game play

Game features:

  • Play mini-games to view imagery collected by researchers and discover ocean animals.
  •  Hone your skills and learn how to identify more than 50 groups of ocean animals.
  • Save and share your favorite images, and curate a personal gallery.
  • Participate in quests and earn badges for your game play contributions.
  • Unlock awards to expand your knowledge of ocean animals and how game play is used for improving AI.
  • Cycle through the Ocean Radio channels to shift the FathomVerse soundscape as you play.

The game is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. This seems like a really great thing for kids as well as us big kids. Gamifying learning is the best way to make learning fun and this game accomplishes even more than just that, so I’m excited to see how the game evolves and even more excited about new discoveries it may make in the future. Read more about it on their website and let us know if you play it.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
