Optimizing a Small-Space Arcade Game Room

Designing a compelling arcade experience in a compact space requires strategic decision-making. From game selection to prize management, every choice impacts guest experience and revenue potential. The right approach depends on the size of your space and the type of guests you serve. Let’s explore key strategies to maximize the effectiveness of your small-space arcade game room.

Game Selection: Quality Over Quantity

When you have limited space, it is better to choose the right mix of games. Don’t just try to fit in as many machines as you can. Focus on high-performing, crowd-favorite games that offer broad appeal and high replay value. A balanced selection of video games, interactive redemption games, and merchandisers can help maximize player engagement.

Consider these space-saving options:
Multi-Game machines – Provide variety while minimizing footprint.
Compact cabinets – Deliver engaging gameplay without occupying too much space.
Competitive games – Basketball or air hockey draws repeat play and social interaction.
Merchandisers – Generate strong revenue per square foot with minimal space requirements.

For example, a bowling center with space for only 10 games might prioritize high-end video games and merchandisers over traditional redemption titles. One of our clients faced this exact dilemma and opted for a video-and-merchandiser-only layout, which significantly boosted revenue while keeping the arcade streamlined. Multiplayer position games, such as Crazy Prize 4-player – Merchandiser, Duck Pond Frenzy 5-player – Redemption, and NBA Superstars 4-player – Video, offer maximum play.

Tower of Tickets (redemption) and Showtime Console (merchandising) are also great bang-for-your-buck games.

Understanding Your Clientele: Transient vs. Repeat Guests

Knowing your audience is essential for an effective arcade layout. Guests generally fall into two categories: transient (one-time visitors) and repeat (regular customers).

Transient locations (hotels, vacation spots, tourist attractions):

  • Guests play for short periods and often redeem tickets quickly.
  • Self-service redemption centers, such as Prize Hub, work well, offering convenience and faster prize distribution.
  • Lower-value, grab-and-go prizes appeal to transient guests.

Repeat locations (bowling centers, family restaurants, community hubs):

  • Guests return frequently and save tickets for higher-value prizes.
  • A traditional counter setup allows for a more personalized redemption experience.
  • Larger prizes can be displayed to encourage long-term engagement.

For example, a place with 20 to 30 games usually has a small counter. Here, returning guests can collect and exchange tickets for bigger prizes over time.

Layout Considerations: Making the Most of Limited Space

A well-thought-out layout can make even a small arcade feel immersive and spacious. Here are three key strategies:

1. Utilize Vertical Space

  • Install wall-mounted prize displays to showcase rewards without taking up floor space.
  • Utilize digital leaderboards to showcase top performers and foster a competitive environment.
  • Consider hanging decorative elements to reinforce the arcade theme without cluttering the walkways.

2. Create Zones

  • Set up areas for different games. For example, have basketball in one section, video games in another, and merchandise near the entrance.
  • Encourage flow by positioning games with shorter playtimes near the entrance and longer, more immersive games toward the back.

3. Maximize Sightlines

  • Avoid overcrowding so guests can easily see all available games.
  • Keep entryways open to create an inviting atmosphere.

Real World Example:

A Betson client recently had 975 square feet available for their arcade. The team was able to fit 15 games in the space.

After the first 7 months, the location is generating an additional approximately $230,000 per year in 975 square feet. That’s a great way to boost your business with a small space.

A well-structured layout increases playtime by ensuring guests feel comfortable and engaged without feeling cramped.
