The arcade industry faced a grim future at the turn of the 21st century. The rise of powerful home consoles and PCs meant traditional arcades were struggling. Many developers moved to the more profitable home console market. However, a few visionaries saw a chance in this change.
One of them was George Petro, founder of Play Mechanix, who noticed a striking paradox: hunting games were popular at home but absent from arcades. This observation became the bedrock for one of the most successful and enduring arcade franchises in history: Big Buck Hunter.

Genesis of a Hunting Phenomenon: The Early Years
George Petro, a veteran of the coin-op industry and lead programmer on classics like NARC and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, founded Play Mechanix in 1995. He did this at a time when major players like Midway were moving away from arcades. Petro’s deep-seated belief in the viability of quality arcade games was a calculated risk, but his conviction ultimately paid off.
In December 2000, the first Big Buck Hunter game was released, a collaboration between Play Mechanix and Incredible Technologies. This original game was a simple, single-gun, round-robin experience where players shot bucks and avoided does. Its accessible gameplay, combined with a crucial lack of gore and a lighthearted tone, made it palatable to a broad, casual audience.
This early success wasn’t a calculated masterstroke; it was, as Petro himself admitted, “extremely lucky.” The game’s straightforward mechanics and quick rounds made it the perfect fit for “street locations” like bars, bowling alleys, and amusement centers, where players sought quick, engaging fun. This discovery of the “casual bar player” demographic was a game-changer, setting the stage for the franchise’s unique cultural footprint.
A New Partnership and a New Level of Competition
Building upon a shared history, Play Mechanix and Raw Thrills built a unique partnership in 2006. With Play Mechanix’s successful franchise needing a new path to growth, founder George Petro reunited with former colleague Eugene Jarvis, who led Raw Thrills. This collaboration was a perfect synergy. Together, their combined strengths propelled the franchise to the next level of success.
This new partnership ushered in a period of monumental innovation. The 2006 release of Big Buck Hunter Pro introduced a groundbreaking two-gun platform that enabled direct, head-to-head competition. This transformed the game from a solitary high score chase into a dynamic social battle, perfectly suited for the bar environment.
The game also introduced new animals and the popular “Critter Hunting” feature. Subsequent titles, such as Big Buck Safari (2008), expanded the game’s scope with new African environments, cementing the series as a global phenomenon.

High Definition, Online Connectivity, and the World Championship
The biggest leap forward came in 2012 with the release of Big Buck HD. This version presented the classic gameplay in stunning 1080p high-definition graphics, giving arcades a visual edge over many home consoles of the time. However, the most significant innovation was the introduction of groundbreaking online features. Players could now compete with people in different locations, track their scores on national leaderboards, and even integrate their profiles with social media like Facebook.
This new connectivity breathed new life into the arcade model and laid the foundation for the game’s vibrant competitive community. The Big Buck World Championship, first held in 2008, has grown from a niche tournament with a $10,000 prize pool into a massive annual event with a prize pool of over $125,000 as of 2024. The tournament, often referred to as “BuckFest,” became a testament to the game’s enduringly skill-intensive nature and the passion of its dedicated fan base.
The franchise has continued to evolve with titles like Big Buck HD Wild (2015), which introduced a popular zombie-hunting mode, and Big Buck Hunter Reloaded (2020), which featured new animals and cross-IP content with Terminator: Salvation and The Walking Dead. The brand has even successfully expanded into the home market cabinets, ensuring the legacy continues for a new generation.
The Unlikely King’s Reign
Big Buck Hunter’s lasting success is a testament to sticking with what you’re good at, being creative, and knowing your audience. The game found its niche and completely owned it by offering a simple, fun, and social experience that people just loved to play together.
It’s this unique blend of being an accessible casual game and a skill-intensive competitive platform that has cemented its place in arcade history. It stands as the undisputed “king of hunting games” and a beloved fixture of entertainment venues everywhere.
