Soldiers in the Bible-Lessons of Faith and Courage –

As we observe Veterans Day, it’s important to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who serve in the military. Throughout history, soldiers have shown immense courage, resilience, and faith, many times going above and beyond to protect and serve others. Soldiers in the Bible also fought for freedom and peace and their stories can teach us valuable lessons.

In the Bible, soldiers play important roles in God’s plan, and their stories offer inspiration for us today. Let’s explore some note-worthy soldiers in the Bible and the lessons they can teach us about faith, duty, and the strength found in trusting God.

1. The Soldier Who Trusted God’s Command: Joshua

Joshua was a leader of the Israelites, known for his courage and unwavering faith. One of his most famous moments came when God commanded him to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. They faced many battles along the way. Joshua didn’t shrink back in fear but boldly trusted God for direction and guidance when he faced challenges.

Key Lesson: Soldiers in the Bible, like Joshua, show us true courage comes from trusting God’s plan, even when the path ahead seems uncertain. Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

2. David: A Young Soldier with a Heart for God

David, though just a young shepherd, was a soldier who faced Goliath with nothing more than a sling and his faith and reliance on God. His story is one of courage, trust, and believing in God’s ability to deliver.

Key Lesson: Like David, soldiers in the Bible show us that faith in God empowers us to face the giants in our lives- whether they are literal battles or personal challenges. David’s victory wasn’t just over Goliath, but over fear, doubt, and the circumstances that seemed insurmountable.

1 Samuel 17:45 reminds us: “You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.”

3. Deborah: Prophetess, Judge, and Military Leader

Deborah possessed exceptional leadership skills and had a remarkable relationship with God. Deborah appears in the book of Judges as a respected, wise judge of the Israelites.  She was also a prophetess and a wife!

With orders from God, Deborah takes charge of their oppression under Sisera. She summons a general and accompanies the army, encouraging them with the knowledge that God would give them a victory.

The Israelite army defeated their enemy and enjoyed a peaceful forty years afterwards, turning back to God and living under the wise counsel and encouragement of Deborah.

Key Lesson: God accomplished much through Deborah thanks to her servant’s heart towards God and his people. She used her skills as a mediator and advisor to direct and lead at God’s direction.  She went willingly “into the battle” with her strong faith in God.

Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.” Judges 4:4.

4. The Faithful Soldier: The Story of Cornelius

We find the story of Cornelius, a Roman centurion (a commander of 100 soldiers) in Acts 10. Sent to keep the peace in Israel, Cornelius was a devout man who feared God and gave generously to the poor.

His faith was so strong that it opened the door for the Gentiles to receive the Gospel, leading to the first outreach beyond the Jewish people.

Key Lesson: Cornelius shows us that true faith and devotion to God lead to profound changes, not only in our own lives but in the world around us.

Soldiers in the Bible, like Cornelius, teach us about the power of a heart devoted to God and willing to follow His call.

Conclusion: Embracing the Soldier’s Faith

On Veterans Day, as we honor the brave members of our military, let’s also remember the soldiers in the Bible whose faith and courage provide timeless examples. They remind us that whether we’re facing a literal battle or a spiritual struggle, we can trust God’s guidance and strength to lead us through.

Let’s walk with courage and faith, knowing that like the soldiers in the Bible, we are never alone in our battles. God is with us, just as He was with Joshua, Deborah, David, and Cornelius.

In 2nd Timothy 2:3-4, Paul encouraged Timothy to carry out his ministry work while “under fire” of opposition and persecution:

“Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.  No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs- he wants to please his commanding officer.

There is “a time for war and a time for peace.”  Ecclesiastes 3:8b.

“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”  Deuteronomy 20:4.

“Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle; He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.”  Psalm 144:1-2.

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.”  Zephaniah 3:1.

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13.
