Brew Review – Pale Poppa by Gulfstream Brewing

To be honest, I’m not sure where they got the name from.

Yes, I understand Big Poppa, the signature song from lamentably deceased rapper Notorious B.I.G. It’s a cute pun, but the beer focus is so much on the Lotus Hops used that I feel could have been the impetus for naming the beer.

This hop, a cultivar from Hopsteiner bred from a variety of hop breeds such as Eastern Gold, Apollo, and Cascade, has gotten a very well deserved reputation for some incredible fruit aromas such as grape, orange, and even a touch of vanilla.

After reading that description, I was immediately sold on Pale Poppa (Pale Ale, 5.3% ABV).

Imbued with a light orange hue, opaque visibility, and the wonderful aroma of grape and tangerine.

The flavor is fantastic. It’s a delicate melange of white grape, a little bit of muscat, some papaya, and a touch of starfruit. It’s not necessarily bitter. There’s a tiny little bit of that on the back end, but it is mostly a wonderfully sweet fruity concoction.

It was almost amazing how delicious the beer was, and, for the first time, the description of it on the beer list did not come close to describing exactly how good it is.

Regardless of the name, the beer is fantastic. I can only hope Lotus Hops are easy enough to get to where this can be brewed more often. It’s one I would definitely go back to again and again.
