A powerful explosion at The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach in West Maui left seven people injured Thursday evening. The blast, which occurred around 6:15 p.m. on February 20th, 2025, sent debris flying from the building and caused panic among resort guests.
According to Maui police, the injured individuals ranged in age from 18 to 74. Three people suffered critical injuries, with one person transported via medevac to Maui Memorial Medical Center’s emergency room.
Bystanders, including individuals with medical and first responder backgrounds, rushed to assist the injured before paramedics and firefighters arrived. Witnesses described the moment of the explosion as a “huge, earth-shaking boom” that immediately raised concerns.
Possible Cause Under Investigation
Preliminary reports suggest that the explosion may have involved liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly used for resort BBQ grills. Witness statements indicate a possible grill malfunction, though authorities have not yet determined the official cause.
While debris was scattered across the beach well into the night, no evacuations were necessary, and officials confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the area.
The Dangers of Gas Explosions
Gas explosions can have devastating consequences, often leading to severe burns, traumatic injuries, and significant property damage. These incidents are frequently linked to faulty equipment, gas leaks, or improper maintenance of fuel systems.
“Explosions like these are often the result of negligence” says Brett Schreiber, attorney at Singleton Schreiber “When safety measures fail, innocent people suffer life-changing injuries. Those responsible must be held accountable, and victims have the right to pursue legal action to recover damages.”
Legal Options for Victims
Victims of gas explosions may have legal recourse to seek compensation for their injuries. A personal injury claim can help cover damages such as:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
- Long-term rehabilitation costs
