Pedestrian Killed in Hit and Run in Waiʻanae

On November 8, 2025, a tragic hit-and-run accident in Waiʻanae claimed the life of a 65-year-old pedestrian. According to the Honolulu Police Department, the man was crossing an extended driveway area near Farrington Highway when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver did not stop and fled the scene. Emergency responders provided life-saving measures and transported the victim to the hospital, where he later passed away from his injuries.

The roadway where the collision occurred does not have a marked crosswalk, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the driver. Hit-and-run crashes are especially devastating because families are left with no answers, no accountability, no closure, and significant emotional and financial burdens. These tragedies also highlight how dangerous it can be for pedestrians who must navigate areas without designated walkways or adequate safety infrastructure. In many parts of O’ahu, driveways and private roads intersect busy highways, creating confusing traffic conditions that can put pedestrians at serious risk.

According to Honolulu police, this incident marks O’ahu’s first non-traffic fatality of the year. However, island-wide, pedestrian and traffic deaths have continued to rise, with 74 deaths so far in 2025, compared to just 41 during the same period last year. Incidents like this one highlight the vulnerability of pedestrians in areas without clear crossing options and the devastating consequences when drivers fail to stop and render aid.

Legal Options after a Hit and Run

Even when a driver has not yet been identified after a hit-and-run incident, there are still potential avenues for compensation. Insurance policies, including uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, may apply. Additionally, there may be other liable parties depending on factors such as roadway design, lighting, signage, or property layout. In cases that occur on private property like this one, legal questions can also arise regarding the property owner’s responsibility for maintaining a reasonably safe environment. Poor lighting, unclear traffic markings, or a lack of signage can sometimes contribute to these tragedies. An experienced attorney will evaluate every potential source of recovery to help support the family’s financial stability and hold the responsible parties accountable.

An attorney can also assist with gathering and preserving evidence early. Evidence may include surveillance footage, witness statements, and collision reconstruction reports, which are crucial to building a strong case in the event of a hit-and-run. They also handle communication with insurance companies and law enforcement so that the family does not have to manage those stressful interactions alone.

A wrongful death claim is not just about financial compensation. It is about recognition, responsibility, and ensuring that the loss is acknowledged under the law.

“When a driver leaves the scene of a crash, it isn’t just a crime, it’s an act that leaves a family without answers and a community without closure,” says Brett Schreiber, managing partner of Singleton Schreiber. “Our role is to stand with those families, make sure their loss is recognized, and fight to uncover the truth.”
