If you can believe it, I only just did a fire safety lesson plan this year for storytime! And with so many great books out there, I decided to add another one to the list! Today’s storytime lesson plan is all about firefighters, the heroic people who put out fires, save people, and prevent as much structural damage as possible. This storytime is most likely a popular one, but would be a perfect fit for October since it’s National Fire Prevention Month.

I love being able to teach little ones early literacy skills, but storytime is also a great time to provide parent education as well. It doesn’t have to be super involved, it just needs to be helpful for busy parents! This storytime would be the perfect time to share some information with parents and caregivers such as creating a fire escape plan for the house and to teach kids about what to do if there is a fire. Partnering with your local fire department would be a great way to share this storytime, maybe even getting a firefighter to come into storytime as a special guest! You can also refer to the Red Cross for a lot of great information about fire safety for kids.
