Here are 20 of the prettiest and best Greek islands for couples to visit. Of course, all of the Greek islands have their own charms, but some are definitely geared more towards groups of friends looking for a boozy holiday and others are more for families with children. As I’m too old for partying and highly allergic to children, I’ve enjoyed putting together this list for couples who want the perfect Greek island to get away from it all.
As well as sharing my own favourite Greek islands that I’ve been to and loved, I thought I’d rope in some other travel bloggers to help out with this list and so that I could include tips on islands that I’ve never visited myself. I asked around and some lovely fellow travel bloggers kindly obliged me with their recommendations.
So, whether you’re on the hunt for a beautiful honeymoon destination or just somewhere for a romantic break, I reckon you’ll find somewhere that takes your fancy. Get comfy with a glass of Ouzo. It might take you a while to choose one…
20 of the best Greek islands for couples: my tips
Before we get stuck in, I’d just like to explain a quick point. Although numbers 3 to 20 are suggestions from other travel bloggers, all of the hotel and accommodation recommendations throughout are from me. And ever on this blog, I’ve split accommodation into three price brackets:
- ‘treat yo’self’ at over 100€ a night
- mid-range at 70-100€ a night
- budget at 50-70€ a night.
All price brackets are correct at the time of writing but they do change all the time. And be aware that many of the Greek islands are very affordable so some seriously fancy hotels fall into the budget bracket, despite not looking like budget accommodation one bit. Brilliant!
That’s it. Let’s begin…
1. Naxos – my personal favourite of all the Greek islands for couples to visit
The beautiful island of Naxos is often overshadowed by its more well-known (and well-Instagrammed) neighbours in the Cyclades, namely Santorini and Mykonos. But having been to all three, it isn’t hard to pick a favourite. And that’s Naxos. Honestly, this little gem is so underrated and stunning. And it’s nowhere near as expensive as its more popular neighbours.
Although it’s one of the best Greek islands for couples to visit, you won’t be surrounded by other tourists on Naxos. It’s quiet and unspoilt. And yet its aesthetic is pretty much exactly the same as the tourist-heavy Santorini, with the classic Greek white-washed buildings and streets lined with pretty flowers. The only difference is that you can enjoy all of this without being surrounded by people. Naxos is also the greenest of the Cyclades islands, so you’ve got lush mountainous backdrops and pretty little villages surrounded by verdant farmland. I’m not a beach person, but there are some beautiful beaches in Naxos. In the main town, Chora, there’s a famous ruined temple that’s perfect for sunset wanderings, a castle area with a maze of magical winding streets, and a great selection of cute independent shops to browse.
Oh and of course, there are countless little restaurants on Naxos serving all the delicious fresh seafood and local wine that you can possibly consume. I had the best Greek salad of my life in one of them. I still think about it to this day…
If all that sounds up your street, have a look at my detailed post on 20 things to do in Naxos. It covers everything from hidden restaurants and rooftop bars with great views, to activities and what to see and do around the island.
Where to stay in Naxos
Naxos has plenty of accommodation to choose from and is really affordable but at the same time, there are plenty of places where you can splash out on something fancy. Here are some options for all budgets that I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
2. Santorini
Santorini is probably the most popular of all Greek islands for couples, loved by honeymoon planners worldwide. It’s known for its blue-and-white buildings and incredible sunsets. Even if it’s not on your ‘must do’ list, you’ll instantly recognise it from about eleventy million Instagram photos.
I’ll be honest, Santorini is one of the most well-known and touristy places I’ve ever visited. That isn’t usually my cup of tea, but I actually really enjoyed it. I mean, just look at it. The caldera is unique. If you weren’t paying attention in Year 9 geography, a caldera is a sort of cauldron-like hollow left when a magma chamber in a volcano is emptied after an eruption. It’s the only inhabited caldera in the world (one of many facts about Greece I could hit you with!). Santorini’s caldera has resulted in some really dramatic and beautiful scenery. Add to that the iconic blue-domed church and lots of white-washed buildings with flowers on their balconies and you’ve got a photographer’s dream.
My only word of caution is that Santorini isn’t cheap. Brace yourself and your bank balance. I managed to visit the island without bankrupting myself, but I planned ahead a lot to do that. If you just wander around and hope for the best, your purse is going to take a hit. Consider yourself warned. If you want to see my tips for visiting the island without needing to remortgage your house, I have a very detailed Santorini itinerary, which covers lots of gorgeous cafés, bars and restaurants, things to do, and what to avoid.
Where to stay in Santorini
As mentioned above, Santorini is painfully expensive compared with most other Greek islands. If you’re looking to splash the cash, you’re spoiled for choice. But if you’re like me and prefer just to have somewhere nice and clean to stay and save your money for eating and activities, you have to do a bit more digging. Here are a few options I’ve researched for different budgets. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
- Treat yo’self: Saint John Villas Oia (around 320€ a night), which is obviously a super expensive one but just look how glam it is! Another option that’s still a treat but not quite as painful on the bank balance is Lemon Suites Santorini (around 161€ a night).
- Mid-range: Dragonfly Villas (around 93€ a night). This is about as affordable as it gets here while still being really nice. Welcome to Santorini!
20 of the best Greek islands for couples: other travel bloggers’ tips
Right, that’s the end of my bit. I’ll stop babbling on and hand it over to others. I feel like my list of places I want to visit myself is about to get much longer… Here are the best Greek islands for couples as suggested by other travel bloggers. Thanks so much to all the brilliant bloggers who kindly helped me out with their great ideas.
3. Chios – for couples who are into history
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Corinne from Reflections En Route.
The fifth-largest Greek island, located in the eastern Aegean Sea, Chios is not as well known or visited by tourists as much as some. This is great because you don’t have to worry about it being too crowded, which makes it the perfect couples getaway. Quiet and gorgeous, the beaches, cafés, medieval villages and museums make this island a must-see.
There is much to do on Chios. A visit to the medieval villages of Pyrgi and Mesta is a must. Their eaves and walls are decorated with beautiful geometric patterns. These villages are also great places to stay, with cute boutique hotels and a variety of tavernas to try local food at.
During the day, you’ll want to visit one or more of the amazing museums highlighting the island’s history, such as the Archaeological or Byzantine Museums, or explaining the processes of its products like the Mastic or Citrus Museums. Additionally, you can visit a castle, a tower, a cave and – most importantly – the Nea Moni Monastery.
The Nea Moni Monastery is a world heritage site and the most visited place on the island. The monastery hosts a small chapel filled with frescoes, icons and even skulls. It was the scene of a horrible massacre and has a dark story, but it is well worth a visit.
It goes without saying that while visiting Chios, you should make sure to save some time for just relaxing in the sun on one of the many beaches. And treat yourself to some amazing seafood, particularly the calamari.
Where to stay in Chios
Chios is very affordable and you can choose from plenty of really lovely places without splashing the cash. Here are some options for Chios accommodation that I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
4. Kimolos
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Elena from Passion for Hospitality.
Located in the Cyclades, Kimolos is a small picturesque island that has remained unspoilt. This Aegean gem is a great destination for couples seeking a romantic holiday for so many reasons that it would take a book to narrate them.
Similar to its sister islands, Santorini, Naxos and Paros, the island’s architecture is based on the Cycladic colours of blue and white. But what attracts visitors to Kimolos the most are its scenic and unique beaches. There are many beaches to choose from, from sandy to pebbly, with caves and bays. There are even hidden and deserted ones, ideal for couples who want to escape the crowds. Must-visit beaches include the Monastiria, tucked away between rocks and requiring a small hike to get to. There’s also the long sandy beach of Bonatsa, where you can relax in loungers and indulge in delicious food and cocktails. Finally, there’s Mavrospilia. Here you can enjoy the raw beauty of the island and catch the most magical sunsets in the Aegean Sea.
Unlike the other Greek islands, there is only one village on the island, the Chorio. You can lose yourself in its maze of alleys dotted with small boutiques, atmospheric bars, pretty orthodox churches and cosy cafés. The traditional Kimolian cuisine is beyond delicious! At any restaurant, the food on the island is made with love and of course fresh local products. Worth visiting as well is the open-air cinema located among the ruins of the castle of Kimolos.
Where to stay in Kimolos
Kimolos is affordable and you can get some really nice places that won’t break the bank. Here are some options for Kimolos accommodation that I’d recommend checking out. Prices are correct at the time of writing:
5. Paxos – one of the best Greek islands for couples looking to explore the Ionians
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Rebecca from Life Beyond Borders.
In the Ionian islands of Greece nestles a hidden gem, Paxos. Nicknamed the ‘Caribbean of Greece’, the Ionians boast picturesque azure waters and limestone cliffs tumbling into the sea. Paxos is no exception.
As there’s no airport on Paxos, it attracts a more sophisticated type of holidaymaker and not the package-tour crowd. One has to fly to Corfu first, then take a 90-minute ferry ride over to the island.
The small island (it’s only 30 square miles) is perfect for a romantic getaway. It’s lined with sandy beaches and small fishing villages – ideal for lunch or sitting by the water and sipping your Greek frappe. Its traditional inland villages will also give you a taste of village life. Explore the Venetian-style churches then join the locals for a simple lunch in a taverna, or coffee brewed the Greek way. Boat trips will take you to many of the island’s beautiful coastal sites, such as Tripitos Arch or the majestic Plani Beach. The latter is on the tip of the northern coast with its huge rocks, guarded by the lighthouse above. You can also do a day trip to AntiPaxos, Paxos’s much smaller neighbour. Once there, you can swim at Voutoumi beach.
Boutique shops can be found in the lanes of the harbour of Gaios, not to mention the choice of chic restaurants and bars or more traditional tavernas. You can soak up the unique atmosphere and vibe that Paxos exudes. You won’t go wrong if you choose Paxos as your Greek island for a couples’ break.
Where to stay in Paxos
Paxos accommodation options are fairly limited if you’re not looking at villas for groups or more generic resorts, but I’d absolutely recommend checking these out. Prices are correct at the time of writing:
6. Irakleia
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Ucman from Brown Boy Travels.
Greece is blessed with so many beautiful islands, but over the years some of them like Santorini and Mykonos have become world-famous and others have remained more local and retained that village feel. Irakleia is one of those islands. It is a hidden gem and a favourite of Greeks for their own holidays.
Irakleia is part of the Lesser Cyclades and has the biggest caves in the entire island system. It provides the classic Greek atmosphere that you can only get on these islands with their whitewashed houses and flower-laden streets. Irakleia is overflowing with authentic Greek food. It is just divine! The drinks are similarly very refreshing and cheap.
With a population so small, Irakleia is a great place to relax without hordes of tourists, which are a staple of other Greek islands in summer. The beaches of Livadi and Tsigouri are absolutely stunning and the gorgeous islands of Venetiko and Schoinousa make perfect boat trips for the day.
Irakleia is a lovely island for couples, with plenty of beaches, small villages and hidden spots that will give you plenty of privacy and intrigue. What’s better than sharing a beautiful sunset with someone you love over a glass of wine? Or even better: a glass of refreshing Mastiha, a local spirit that tastes like a summer evening in a glass.
Where to stay in Irakleia
Irakleia accommodation options are fairly limited, especially if you’re not after hiring a villa. But I’d recommend checking these wee gems out. Prices are correct at the time of writing:
7. Antiparos – one of the best Greek islands for couples who want to get away from it all
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Paulina from Paulina on the Road.
If you are searching for a calm island getaway with your partner, Antiparos is the right choice. Located off the coast of its larger neighbour Paros, this is a great island with hidden and beautiful places. It is tiny but has enough places to explore.
Antiparos offers a quiet holiday for couples, especially those who love the famous Greek food. If you are looking for a great place to have lunch in Antiparos, go to Elia Kafenes. This is a popular cafe for breakfast and lunch, with impressive options. After grabbing lunch, there are some places you must visit with your partner. One of the major places is the Cave of Antiparos. After that, visit the Church Of Agios Nikolaos, which is a lovely church built in the year 1783. The Cycladic Art Museum is also a great recommendation for couples. You can witness the copies of famous statuettes there.
Apart from visiting these places, there are some activities to enjoy for couples. Antiparos is an ideal place to go diving or snorkelling. You can also take a boat ride with your partner and experience the beautiful landscape of the island. If you want to spend some breezy time with your partner, make a visit to Saint George Beach. It offers a relaxing sunbathing opportunity and visitors also like to take a swim here.
You should plan a two to three day holiday to enjoy the island completely. It also offers luxurious places to stay. If you are looking to visit the islands and wondering where to stay on Paros, why not stay in the quieter Antiparos and take a ferry ride to Paros when you want to explore the larger island?
Where to stay in Antiparos
For a smaller island, Antiparos has a good selection of accommodation. Here are two that I’d really recommend checking out. Prices are correct at the time of writing:
8. Milos
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Chrysoula from Greece Travel Ideas.
Milos has gorgeous beaches and landscapes. It’s also trendy and very romantic so is the perfect Greek island for couples. Milos is a horseshoe-shaped island, situated in the south-west Cyclades, and has a lovely relaxing ambience. The main town is Plaka and the main harbour is Adamas. This is the place for food, shopping and boat trips and is where the bus terminal is situated.
There are seven pretty villages on Milos to explore, including the traditional fishing villages of Klima and Mandrakia. The island has beautiful beaches, some more accessible than others. Kleftiko Beach can only be reached by boat and has stunning caves and rock formations, which are best explored by swimming to them. If you really like a challenge, Tsigrado Beach can only be reached using a rope and a wobbly ladder. There are numerous boat trips to enjoy and many serve lunch on board and have the opportunity for swimming and snorkelling. If you have never been diving, there are several places where you can be taught by professional instructors.
If you enjoy discovering history, there is an ancient theatre on Milos, dating from the 3rd century BC. There are also catacombs – at 184 metres in length, these are the longest in Europe!
The most romantic time of day is as the sun sets on Milos. The best place to enjoy the most spectacular sunset is in Plaka, where you can climb up to the kastro or to the church of Panayia Korfiatissa.
Where to stay in Milos
There are plenty of really lovely options when it comes to Milos accommodation. Here are a few I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
9. Thasos – for couples into adventure
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Raluca from Travels With A Spin.
Thasos, the Emerald Island of the Aegean, is the northernmost and probably greenest Greek island. It has a lot to offer and is close to the mainland, being easily reached by ferry from both Kavala and Keramoti.
Thasos has many beautiful beaches. The best one for sun lovers is Golden Beach, a 4km-long white sand stripe with shallow waters, ideal for swimming. Don’t skip Saliara beach, made out of small marble pieces from a nearby quarry. Its clear turquoise waters are fascinating to watch and offer the best snorkelling opportunities on the island. Technically not a beach, Giola, a natural pool carved in rocks, is another not to be missed spot.
For adventurous couples, a jeep safari tour on the Ypsarion mountain is a mandatory trip. It will not only give you the chance to enjoy breathtaking views but also test your driving skills on rocky terrain. Panagia is a small village in the centre of the island with twisting narrow streets, its own Love Spring, Bridge of Love, Pirates’ Path and Dragon Cave. With a bridge of love, how could it not be one of the best Greek islands for couples?!
Thasos will also give you the opportunity to learn history in an entertaining and fun manner. In the island’s capital city, Limenas, there’s an old preserved amphitheatre with breathtaking views of the sea and harbour. In the south of the island, at the ancient marble quarry of Aliki, you can find out how marble was obtained more than 1,000 years ago.
Where to stay in Thasos
Here are some options for Thasos accommodation that I’d recommend checking out. The island has plenty of options for all budgets and some have glorious sea views. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
10. Kos
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Alice from Adventures of Alice.
Despite being the third-largest island in the Dodecanese, Kos can be quiet if you find the right spot. This makes it the perfect destination for a couple’s trip. Full of fascinating things for history lovers, foodies, fans of Greek culture or couples who just need a few days on the beach, Kos has it all.
Like many of the Greek islands, its convenient location make it ideal for a few island-hopping adventures. The nearby volcanic island of Nisyros is a popular excursion and the European hidden gem of Kalymnos also makes for a great trip. Kos is also close enough to the Turkish border to warrant a day trip to Bodrum, where you’ll find a delightful harbour, castles, mausoleums and even more beautiful beaches. However, don’t forget your passport for this one!
For couples’ activities where you don’t have to leave the shore, Kos is packed full of historical wonders. The Asklepion is one of the most popular things to see on the island, with the ancient Agora coming in at close second. There’s also a fantastic Roman Odeon on the southern outskirts of Kos Town and the archaeological zone opposite is fascinating to explore. As well as history, you can relax on beautiful white-sand beaches, like Paradise Beach and Capo Crichelo, wander through the serene pine landscape of Plaka Forest, bathe in the thermal hot springs that cover most of eastern Kos or bring out your inner child with a trip to the Aquatica waterpark!
Where to stay in Kos
Kos is a relatively large island, so naturally, there are plenty of accommodation options to choose from. Whatever your style or budget, you’ll be sorted. Here are a few that I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
11. Crete
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Džangir from Dr Jam Travels.
Crete is the largest Greek island, with an area of 8,500 square kilometres and a coastline of more than 1,000 kilometres. It is located on the south border of the Aegean sea. You might think that on an island of this size there is mass tourism and no quiet space for romance. But that is a wrong assumption and it can easily be one of the best Greek islands for couples to visit if they do some research.
Crete offers a variety of things for couples, from bars and clubs, to mountains and archaeological sites like Knossos, to secluded and romantic places. The Old Town of Chania is probably on top of the list for couples. You can stroll around the historical town and port, then sit for a coffee or a meal and enjoy the view.
If you are looking for a place with a beautiful and romantic sunset, then you should visit the west coast, Falassarna beach. You can also find seclusion, peace, and clean water at Agiofarago Beach. This is accessible by boat or by crossing the gorge. Similar is the town of Loutro, again accessible by boat. Here you can enjoy turquoise water to swim in or enjoy a nice dinner in local restaurants. Couples who would like to move from the beach and the sea into a lush green haven would enjoy Zaros village. Here you can find the beautiful forests, a gorge with a waterfall, lakes, old churches, and serenity.
Where to stay in Crete
As the biggest Greek island, Crete has loads of accommodation options across plenty of different areas. As mentioned above, Chania is lovely so I’ve focused on there in my research. Here are a few places I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
12. Folegandros – one of the best Greek islands for couples who want to unwind
With thanks to fellow travel bloggers Dean and Laynni from Routinely Nomadic.
The tiny, serene island of Folegandros is the ideal place for a quiet romantic getaway. Despite the stunning scenery, from a hill-top church and a handful of outstanding beaches, wonderful Folegandros only sees a fraction of the tourists that visit its more popular neighbours of Milos, Naxos and Santorini. However, their loss is your gain. This hidden gem is the perfect place to relax and unwind for a few days (or a week, or longer if you have the time).
The main village, named Chora like so many others in these islands, is typically adorable, an attractive maze of narrow alleys, whitewashed buildings and the occasional greenery-filled plaza. There is a good selection of terrific souvlaki places to choose from, many with evocative names, yet one of the best is the rather basically named Souvlaki Club. Seafood lovers will also be spoiled for choice. A popular after-dinner constitutional is the short (but steep) climb to the Church of Panagia, where you can watch the sunset from its spectacular location looming over the village, or continue out to see the view from the edge of the dramatic cliffs.
Getting further from the village, it is possible to hike the length of this little island in just a few hours, enjoying incredible ocean views all along the picturesque ridge running down the centre. Then, hidden away on the opposite side of the island from Chora is gorgeous, sheltered Angali Beach, an ideal spot to soak up some sun and take a dip in the calm, clear water.
Where to stay in Folegandros
I was impressed with the range of accommodation on Folegandros, considering it’s only a little’un. Here are a few I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
13. Corfu
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Carolyn from Holidays to Europe.
Located in the north Ionian Sea, Corfu is one of the best Greek islands for couples to visit because it’s so pretty. It has strong Venetian and French influences as well as historical links to Britain, which gives it an eclectic mix of Greek and foreign architecture.
Corfu is known for its lush green landscape, turquoise water and authentic villages. Corfu Town, the island’s largest town, is a must-visit. Its Old Town has two fortresses and narrow cobbled streets lined with tall shuttered buildings in soft colours, thanks to its Venetian past. It is in these streets that you will find shops, boutiques and galleries selling everything from touristy souvenirs to handmade leather goods, jewellery, art and food. Corfu Town also serves as a good base for visiting the nearby islands of Paxos and Antipaxos, as well as Albania.
While there is plenty to see and do in Corfu Town, the pretty bays and beaches of Corfu are great for couples too. For sandy beaches, head to the west coast and for pebbly beaches, head east. Glyfada is a great choice as it is close to the capital. But north of Corfu Town, Paleokastritsa and Dassia are other good options. If it’s nightlife you’re after, you’ll find plenty of nightclubs and bars along the Gouvia coastal road.
All along the coastline, you’ll find all-inclusive resorts and adults-only hotels that are the perfect base for a romantic stay. Couples can make use of the excellent pool and spa facilities, stroll along the beach, enjoy day trips and evening entertainment or simply relax by the pool. The sunsets on Corfu are magical, too.
Where to stay in Corfu
As a larger and popular Greek island, Corfu has plenty of accommodation options. Although it’s not the cheapest overall, there’s something to suit most budgets if you do a little hunting around. These are just a handful of places I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
14. Rhodes
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Roxanne from Faraway Worlds.
A relatively large island, situated closer to Turkey than Greece, Rhodes is a fascinating mix of cultures and landscapes. With beautiful beaches, ancient ruins and medieval old towns, Rhodes is a wonderful addition to any Greek island-hopping itinerary.
Start your trip by exploring the medieval old town near the port (you’ll probably arrive there by ferry anyway). Rhodes town is a UNESCO heritage site, one of the most popular parts of the island, and a beautiful destination for couples. The walled old town is very romantic, with twisting old streets, tiny shops and charming restaurants. You can also walk around the old town halls, for stunning views of the surrounding sea. The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes and the Museum of Modern Greek Art are also well worth visiting. Spend a night or two here, before making your way around the coast to Lindos.
If you hire a car, there are several lovely (and romantic) spots to visit on the way to Lindos. Top of the list is Rodini Park, just outside of Rhodes Town and the oldest park in the world. With narrow paths, lakes strewn with water lilies and lush vegetation, it’s the perfect place for a romantic walk. Another good option is the Seven Springs, a beautiful lake with shady paths, mountain views and an excellent restaurant. Otherwise, stop at Ladiko, a small, picturesque bay close to Faliraki. Have a swim in the turquoise waters and lunch at the nearby tavern before continuing on to Lindos.
When you arrive in Lindos, you’ll be immediately struck by the white buildings and lovely views. The acropolis is fascinating to explore and the views from the town are gorgeous, especially at sunset. If you have the time, continue your trip to enjoy the beautiful, isolated beaches on the southern tip of the island.
Where to stay in Rhodes
As a bigger and quite popular Greek island, Rhodes offers plenty of places to stay for all budgets. Here are some options I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
15. Gavdos – one of the best Greek islands off the beaten path
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Gabi from The Tiny Book.
Couples looking for romance surrounded by an idyllic atmosphere should head to South Crete and board a ferry to the remote island of Gavdos, in the Libyan Sea.
Almost unknown, Gavdos is a Greek island belonging to the region of Chania, in Crete. The tiny island is the perfect place to disconnect and recharge. The island has quite a wild landscape, and it’s a great destination to explore some of the most unspoilt beaches in Greece. Being only 9km long and less than 5km wide, it can be easily explored by following the coastal hiking paths. The island’s unique flair comes from its primitive characteristics and unspoilt nature: there are only a few permanent residents, limited electricity and water supplies, and hardly any hotels.
The best thing about Gavdos is the fantastic pristine beaches that dot the coast. It’s one of the southernmost places in Europe and actually closer to Africa than to the capital of Greece, Athens. Therefore, Gavdos enjoys fairly mild weather with very hot summers. Perfect for enjoying the beach. Among the beaches worth visiting, the most popular ones are Sarakiniko and Karabe. However, to truly experience the wild nature of this Greek island, it’s a good idea to reach the lonely coast of Korfos, as well as Lavrakas and Potamos.
While spending some days on Gavdos, it’s a great idea to also check out Tripiti, a natural arch with three imposing holes located on the southeastern coast.
The only way to get to Gavdos is with the regular boat service. Ferries depart from the nearest town of Chora Sfakion, on the southern coast of Crete.
Where to stay in Gavdos
As a really un-touristy little island, Gavdos has very limited accommodation options. I’ve scrabbled around and only found one that I’d recommend looking into. The price is correct at the time of writing:
16. Agistri – one of the best Greek islands for couples into scuba diving
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Lotte from Met Camper Door Europa.
One of the prettiest and best Greek islands for couples, which not many people know about (just the Greek themselves, and they prefer to keep it that way), is Agistri. This little gem is located in the Saronic Gulf just a short one-hour ferry ride from Athens but it feels like a world away.
Agistri may be small, but it has enough to keep you occupied for at least three days. The main villages on Agistri are Skala and Megalochori. Both towns are tiny. However, there are some nice restaurants and bars, accommodation options for every budget and a couple of souvenir shops selling local produce and art.
If you are into scuba diving, Agistri is a great place to do it. There are several companies in Megalochori and Skala offering dive packages (Interdive is a very good one). While you won’t see the tropical fish usually found around at dive spots around the equator, that doesn’t mean diving here will be boring. You can go wreck diving, wall diving, deep diving and more. If you haven’t gone scuba diving before, that’s no problem as a local diving club, Interdive, offers introduction courses.
If you prefer to stay on land, be sure to visit Skliri beach (the east side of Agistri) and Dragonera Beach (the west side of the island). At Dragonera beach, seat yourself at one of the sunloungers, order a beer at the kiosk (or bring your own from Skala or Megalochori, where you can find a small supermarket) and enjoy the beautiful view. And what’s more romantic than catching a beautiful sunset? Dragonera beach is an excellent place to do so!
All in all, Agistri may just be the perfect Greek island for your romantic getaway.
Where to stay in Agristi
As a small island, Agristi offers a fairly limited choice of accommodation but it’s incredibly affordable for the quality. Here are two really well-rated options that I’d recommend checking out. Prices are correct at the time of writing:
17. Paros
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Tiffany from A Girl and Her Passport.
The Cycladic island of Paros is a dream destination for couples looking for a balance between beautiful beaches and things to do.
If you arrive in Paros by ferry, you will be in the town of Paroikia. In Paroikia, you should visit the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, the ‘church with 100 doors’. It dates back to the 4th century AD and is one of the most famous landmarks in Greece. Also in Parioikia is the Archaeological Museum. It is incredible to see the ancient art found on this island.
Make your way to Naoussa next to visit the beautiful beach of Kolymbithres beach. It has some large granite rocks that surround the beach and make for a unique setting. Then get lost wandering the beautiful fishing village of Naoussa. Wander out to the ruins of the Venetian Castle in the port. Right near the ruins is the wonderful restaurant, Tsachpinis. Try the fresh mussels and freshly baked Greek bread. This is a romantic spot to watch the sunset with a glass of wine. After dinner, you can wander down to the beach for a romantic walk, or if you are ready to dance with your partner, head down the main street of Naoussa to the clubs that line the road.
No matter what you do in Paros, it is one of the most wonderful Greek islands for couples to enjoy.
Where to stay in Paros
Paros has plenty of accommodation options for all budgets. It’s fairly popular but there’s more than enough to go around and you can get some real bargains if you do a bit of digging. Here are a few beauties that I’d recommend checking out. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
18. Amorgos
With thanks to fellow travel bloggers Maria and Katerina from It’s All Trip To Me.
With its raw beauty, laid-back vibes and one of the most charming Old Towns in the Aegean Sea, Amorgos is not just another beautiful Greek island. Amorgos is love itself: the perfect destination for any couple.
Unlike other Greek islands that suffer from the effects of mass tourism, Amorgos has managed to keep its authentic character intact. The island’s barren scenery with high mountains reaching out to touch the sky, deep blue waters and traditional architecture of white-washed buildings and narrow alleys compose an entirely romantic ambience.
The Old Town of Amorgos, Chora, is dazzlingly white and has an irresistibly nostalgic air. Chora is particularly enchanting in the evening when it’s dimly lit. It’s the dreamiest place to walk hand in hand from one square to the other via winding alleys that seem to have sprung out of the pages of a fairytale.
Amorgos is renowned for its authenticity and the same holds for the island’s food scene. No matter where you choose to eat, food in Amorgos is prepared with local ingredients according to centuries-old recipes.
The ultimate highlight of Amorgos is Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery. To get there, you need to walk a steep uphill path but the views from the top are more than rewarding. Another sight not to miss in Amorgos is the wreck of Olympia, which has lain in a small bay near Kalotaritissa Beach since 1980.
However, the best thing to do in Amorgos when travelling with your better half is to simply wander around. Take in its charms and the beauty of your surroundings.

You’ll find accommodation options galore on Amorgos, whatever your budget. Here is a handful that I’d recommend looking into. All prices are correct at the time of writing:
19. Hydra – one of the best Greek islands for couples when visiting Athens
With thanks to fellow travel blogger Dymphe from Dym Abroad.
One of the prettiest islands in Greece for couples is Hydra. Hydra is a small island located near the capital of Greece, Athens. It’s worth visiting because it is picturesque and authentic, which makes it a very romantic place to visit as a couple. Also, the island is known for the beautiful pink Bougainvillea flowers, which you can find everywhere!
It is very easy to reach Hydra by ferry from a lot of other places in Greece. The ferry from Athens takes about 1.5 hours. The most well known and busiest part of Hydra is the port, where you’ll arrive off the ferry. Here you’ll find shops, restaurants and many more of the best things to do in Hydra.
Also, there are many places on Hydra with a very romantic view of the port and the sea. A great place for this is Spilia Beach, where you can also swim. You can see the most amazing sunset here, which makes it even more romantic.
If you want to go to other places on Hydra, you can do so by walking or you can take a water taxi. These are the only ways you can move around the island, as there are no cars on Hydra. Beautiful places that are worth visiting include Vlichos and Kamini. Also, you could rent a boat yourself, and discover the island alone with your loved one.

20. Sifnos
With thanks to fellow travel bloggers Derek and Mike from Robe Trotting.
One of the most beautiful Greek islands for couples to visit is the serene and charming Sifnos, Greece. This is a bit of a romantic hidden gem in the Cyclades. It’s a scenic and peaceful location and a nice contrast to the nearby party islands.
Couples can easily reach Sifnos. It’s well connected to Athens and other islands by high-speed ferry routes. All of them arrive in Kamares, a picturesque village known for its golden beaches. It’s full of things to do like shopping in boutiques, dining in local restaurants, and of course, relaxing on the beach.
Kamares beach has rented sunbeds where you can enjoy a drinks service from the waterfront bars. The town of Kamares is full of charming white-washed homes built on the hillsides that ring the beach. It’s one of the best places to stay on the island. If you’re based there, it’s easy to get around the island.
One of the other nicest beaches to visit on Sifnos is Vathy beach, located inside a protected cove of white sand and turquoise water. It’s home to several waterfront tavernas that are perfect for a romantic meal or post-beach drink. Couples will also love Faros Beach, a secluded beach in a fishing village.
For nightlife, couples can head to the largest city on Sifnos, Apollonia. It offers just the right amount of nightlife and has a large selection of fine-dining restaurants with roof decks and an upbeat vibe. There is also an abundance of incredible landscapes to explore on Sifnos. For adventurous and outdoorsy couples, the best way to enjoy Sifnos is to hike Sifnos Trails. This is a 100-km network of hiking routes that weave around the island. It’s packed with scenic views and attractions along the way.
