God Moves Hearts – Another Well Ministries
Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem: — Ezra 7:27
If you are like me, there have been many times when you have wondered what was going through the mind of a leader. There were moments I did not fully understand what my supervisor was doing or thinking. At other times, I may have questioned decisions made at higher levels by local officials, state leaders, or even national leaders.
We often wish we could see behind the curtain of decision-making. We want clarity. We want an explanation. We want assurance that things are being handled wisely.
But life is not always about understanding what leaders are thinking. It is about remembering who ultimately governs hearts.
In Ezra 7, the Persian king made a decision that favored the rebuilding and beautifying of the house of the Lord. Ezra did not credit clever persuasion or political maneuvering. He praised God. The Lord had put it in the king’s heart.
That is a remarkable statement.
The king was not the spiritual leader of Israel. Yet God was able to direct his heart for His purposes. This reminds us of a powerful truth: leadership may operate on human levels, but authority ultimately rests under God’s sovereignty.
There will always be decisions we do not fully understand. There will be leadership choices that puzzle us. But Scripture reassures us that God is not absent from positions of power. He can move hearts. He can guide decisions. He can accomplish His purposes through unexpected means.
Trust does not require that we agree with or comprehend every decision. It requires confidence that God’s purposes are not thwarted by human authority.
If you find yourself frustrated or uncertain about leadership today, remember Ezra’s response: he blessed the Lord. He saw beyond the human decision to the divine hand at work.
God is not limited by who sits in positions of authority. He is able to direct hearts according to His will. Where might you need to shift your focus from human leadership to God’s sovereign hand?
