Finding Hope in Hard Seasons: 9 Promises of God for When You’re Suffering
Topics we will cover: Christian Encouragement | Faith in Hard Times | Biblical Promises During Suffering | Finding Hope When It Seems Hopeless
Pain without a purpose is gut-wrenching. But pain with purpose can create great things. Read on to learn nine of God’s promises that will help you find hope in hard seasons. In the aftermath of my husband’s death, paired with the experience of deep grief, I learned that the bible has a lot to say about suffering. I want to share with you today what I have learned about hope and healing in the midst of suffering.
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”
–2 Corinthians 4:17, NIV
Suffering is one of life’s most challenging aspects, but there is a silver lining. Scripture shows us that suffering can produce eternal glory, spiritual maturity, and a deeper connection to God.
What Is Glory And How Does It Relate To Suffering?
The word glory means divine radiance, honor, splendor, majesty, and God’s revealed character. When we suffer, God is refining us and revealing His glory in us and through us. Through suffering, we can choose to become more like Him.
Suffering challenges us to walk in faith despite the difficult circumstances we are facing. The emotional pain creates an atmosphere where our deep beliefs rise to the surface. We ask ourselves questions like do I really believe that God is good? When our belief system does not line up with scripture and our true identity in Christ, it creates conflict. This conflict produces emotional pain.
The beauty of Jesus is that He uses everything we face to heal our hearts, including our pain. The emotional pain you are experiencing provides a guide for your healing journey. This is how He takes us from glory to glory.
‘But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit.’
-2 Corinthians 3:18, ASV
9 Promises of God for Christians Who Are Suffering
I am facing a season of suffering as I write to you today. My husband committed suicide, and the emotional pain has been overwhelming. My grief led me to the following scriptures, and as I studied them, I realized that many of God’s promises are attached to suffering.
1. You Are Blessed When You Suffer for Doing Good
‘But even if you happen to suffer for doing what is right, you will have the joyful experience of the blessing of God. And don’t be intimidated or terrified by those who would terrify you. ‘
-1 Peter 3:14, TPT
Even when you’re misunderstood, rejected, or facing trials, God sees your faithfulness. According to the Bible, suffering for doing good is not something to fear—it actually provides a blessing. If you’re enduring hardship for your integrity, know you are blessed in your suffering, and heaven is cheering you on.
2. God Will Restore You — Even Better Than Before
‘The Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.
-Job 42:10, AMP
If you’re in a season of loss, let this truth bring you hope: God is a God of full-circle restoration. He can redeem every broken piece and bring beauty from ashes. Your story isn’t over, and restoration is part of your inheritance as a child of God.
3. God’s Glory Will Be Revealed in You
‘I am convinced that any suffering we endure is less than nothing compared to the magnitude of glory that is about to be unveiled within us. ‘
-Romans 8:18, TPT
This promise reminds us that the glory after suffering will far outweigh the pain. The glory of God shows us His character. God is using your trial to mold you into someone who reflects His character. And it begins with love. Once we get a revelation of His all-enduring love, then we can face anything that this life throws at us. His glory is being revealed in you now, even through your struggle.
4. God Will Comfort You
‘Now our hope for you is unshakable, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings you will also share in God’s comforting strength.’
-2 Corinthians 1:7, TPT
God is the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. He will comfort you, strengthen you, and use your healing to help others.
No one understands your pain like God does. He promises to walk with you through every valley. His comfort doesn’t just soothe—it strengthens. And as you are comforted, you become someone who can offer hope and Christian encouragement during trials to others.
5. Suffering Builds Perseverance, Character, and Hope
3 But that’s not all! Even in times of trouble we have a joyful confidence, knowing that our pressures will develop in us patient endurance. 4 And patient endurance will refine our character, and proven character leads us back to hope. 5 And this hope is not a disappointing fantasy, because we can now experience the endless love of God cascading into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who lives in us!
-Romans 5:3-5, TPT
Hardship isn’t pointless — it strengthens your faith and refines your character. Suffering leads to perseverance and patient endurance. This perseverance builds character, and character develops hope.
God doesn’t waste anything. Every challenge you face shapes your soul for eternity. Through the refining fire of hardship, you’re gaining endurance, integrity, and a hope that does not disappoint—because it’s anchored in Him.
6. Jesus Gives Peace in the Middle of Trouble
‘And everything I’ve taught you is so that the peace which is in me will be in you and will give you great confidence as you rest in me. For in this unbelieving world you will experience trouble and sorrows, but you must be courageous, for I have conquered the world!” ‘
-John 16:33, TPT
Trouble is part of the human experience, but as a believer, you are not alone. Jesus offers you a supernatural peace—one that quiets the noise and anchors your soul. You can face today’s problems knowing the victory is already won. As you seek God in your season of suffering, He will fill you with courage.
7. Trials Lead to Maturity in Christ
2 My fellow believers, when it seems as though you are facing nothing but difficulties, see it as an invaluable opportunity to experience the greatest joy that you can! 3 For you know that when your faith is tested it stirs up in you the power of endurance. 4 And then as your endurance grows even stronger, it will release perfection into every part of your being until there is nothing missing and nothing lacking. -James 1:2-4, TPT
Joy in trials? Yes, because they lead to maturity and spiritual strength. As difficult as they are, the truth is that trials grow your faith and make you complete.
While trials may feel overwhelming, they’re actually working in your favor. They’re not setbacks; they’re setups for maturity in Christ. Your faith is being made stronger, more resilient, and more real with each step you take.
As I face a new life as a widow, this scripture encouraged me to stand on the truth that my life is happening for me and not to me. By accepting this truth, I am creating an atmosphere for God to grow me and mature me despite the tragedy I am facing. He can do the same for you!
8. God Will Strengthen and Establish You
‘And then, after your brief suffering, the God of all loving grace, who has called you to share in his eternal glory in Christ, will personally and powerfully restore you and make you stronger than ever. Yes, he will set you firmly in place and build you up. ‘
-1 Peter 5:10, TPT
Suffering may shake your world, but it won’t destroy you. On the other side of this pain, God promises to strengthen and establish you. He’s building a foundation in your life that no storm can shake. The day I learned my husband was no longer with me on this earth, my entire outlook on life seemed to slip through my hands. I felt as if my life could never be put back together. But, that was a lie.
God’s word showed me the truth. After you suffer, God will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. He sets us firmly in place and builds us back up to better than before. The beauty of living in union with Jesus is that He always strengthens, heals, and restores us.
9. God Is Close to the Brokenhearted
‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
-Psalms 34:18, NIV
When your heart is shattered and your spirit crushed, you are not alone. In fact, that’s when God is closest. He leans in with compassion, ready to heal and hold you. You’re not abandoned—you’re seen, known, and deeply loved. God is as close as your breath, especially when your heart feels like it’s breaking.

- Restoration
- Glory
- Comfort
- Perseverance
- Character
- Hope

Encouragement: Faith Is the Key to Victory
How do we pass the test of suffering? With faith. So, what is faith? Let’s look at Hebrews 11:1.
‘Now faith brings our hopes into reality and becomes the foundation needed to acquire the things we long for. It is all the evidence required to prove what is still unseen. ‘
–Hebrews 11:1, TPT
Faith is the substance of things hoped for. It brings our hopes into reality. When you are operating in faith you are trusting God before you see or experience the breakthrough. Faith becomes the foundation for our heart’s desires. I believe that our choice to trust produces the hope we need to grow our faith.
“If your faith remains strong… you will continue to experience the untold blessings of God.”
-James 1:12, TPT
Spark Hope Again: What Are You Believing For?
Reignite your hope with faith by creating a faith-filled vision board, which will serve as a visual reminder of what you’re believing God for. The key here is to create a visual reference to assist in changing your thinking so that you can truly believe for the desires of your heart to manifest.
