Johann Matthias Ranftl (1804-1854) was a celebrated Viennese artist of the Biedermeier period, recognized for his contributions to fine art painting and genre scenes. His journey in painting began in Vienna, where he was born in the Wieden district. Coming from a family with deep artistic ties, his grandfather had connections to the renowned painter Franz Anton Maulbertsch. Ranftl’s passion for painting was nurtured by his mother, leading him to study at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1817 under distinguished mentors Johann Baptist Lampi and Anton Petter.
Ranftl’s early career was marked by an inspiring journey through Switzerland and Germany in 1819, where he found a deep admiration for landscape paintings.
