How many times have I been standing before a sunrise or sunset—with color so breathtaking that I just have to share it? I pull out my phone and snap a quick shot, but alas, the photo doesn’t come anywhere close to capturing what I see. But here’s the thing … Even if I were a talented photographer with an excellent camera, it’s still unlikely I could produce a photo that would satisfy me, because it’s not just the spectacle of that sunset that I want to share; it’s the way it’s making me feel—the sense of awe, the gladness in my heart, the gratitude. That’s what I really want to communicate. And that, it turns out, is a job especially well-suited for painters.

The relationship between the sky and the land is front and center in the work of Michael Magrin, as seen in such paintings as Western Reverie (oil on linen, 24×24).

For artist Carl Bretzke, it’s often the fading light, or even the absence of natural light, in a nocturnal sky, that supplies his inspiration and creates a palpable mood, as seen in Industrial Park Supper Club (oil on linen, 30×40).

In Cape Cod (acrylic on aluminum, 20×20), artist Anda Styler captures the incredible color and glow seen in a cloud-filled sky.

In this new issue, we’re delighted to feature artists who create work in which skies figure prominently. Driven by a powerful enthrallment, each of these painters is working—with brush and paint—to capture that beauty and mystery of land and sky in a way that conveys a mood and tells a story.

Canadian artist Holly Dyrland lives on the prairies of Alberta, where the vast skies contribute deeply to her days—a connection that clearly empowers Morning Light (acrylic on canvas, 36×60).

And That’s Not All

Along with the inspiration and insights from these four artists, the new issue offers all sorts of additional advice and take-aways, including Zoey Frank’s fascinating account of the creative process behind a new, monumentally sized painting, a lesson on choosing a bigger brush, and exercises that can help you channel your inner John Constable! Discover all this and more in the July/August 2025 issue of Artists Magazine, available here [LINK].

Artist Zoey Frank shares the story behind the largest painting she has worked on yet.
