How many times have I been standing before a sunrise or sunset—with color so breathtaking that I just have to share it? I pull out my phone and snap a quick shot, but alas, the photo doesn’t come anywhere close to capturing what I see. But here’s the thing … Even if I were a talented photographer with an excellent camera, it’s still unlikely I could produce a photo that would satisfy me, because it’s not just the spectacle of that sunset that I want to share; it’s the way it’s making me feel—the sense of awe, the gladness in my heart, the gratitude. That’s what I really want to communicate. And that, it turns out, is a job especially well-suited for painters.

In this new issue, we’re delighted to feature artists who create work in which skies figure prominently. Driven by a powerful enthrallment, each of these painters is working—with brush and paint—to capture that beauty and mystery of land and sky in a way that conveys a mood and tells a story.

And That’s Not All
Along with the inspiration and insights from these four artists, the new issue offers all sorts of additional advice and take-aways, including Zoey Frank’s fascinating account of the creative process behind a new, monumentally sized painting, a lesson on choosing a bigger brush, and exercises that can help you channel your inner John Constable!
