Art News
There’s nothing more energizing than being surrounded by incredible new artists, cutting-edge art, and like-minded art lovers, designers, and collectors for a week. Coming together in the wake of the Los Angeles fires underscored the importance of art as a point of community and resilience, and my visit to Frieze Los Angeles left me eager to share the most exciting trends I discovered in fresh and dynamic new collections.
This year’s standout trends? Bold, expressive works across painting and sculpture, alongside a surge of innovative mixed media pieces. There was a strong focus on nature and sustainability, with artists integrating sustainable materials and textiles in line with eco-conscious approaches to art making.
Saatchi Art artists are at the forefront of these shifts, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to contemporary art. Here are six artists whose work captures the directions I found at Frieze LA:
Mario La Fortezza
-
Mario La Fortezza explores the natural world through a compelling blend of photography, collage, and sculpture. By transferring images onto plywood, he creates layered reconstructions of trees that are dynamic and dimensional.
Anastasia Korsakova
-
Anastasia Korsakova‘s crisp, at times emotionally distant portraits use abstraction and limited color palettes reminiscent of American painter and Frieze-favorite Alex Katz, with an added hyperrealist touch.
Iliker Canikligil
-
Iliker Canikligil‘s large-scale digitally altered photographic works transform the familiar into Surreal immersive landscapes. He explores existential themes, questioning humanity’s place within nature—and nature’s evolving presence in our lives.
Hyunseok Cho
-
Hyunseok Cho layers pigments and materials to create highly tactile works that engage the senses. His bold, sculptural approach to painting mirrors the heightened textural experimentation seen throughout Frieze this year.
Tomaz Capobianco
-
Tomaz Capobianco was a standout artist at The Other Art Fair Los Angeles with his innovative use of laser engraving on paint for pattern-dense reliefs. Merging technology with traditional artistic techniques, he explores the relationship between form, depth, and materiality.
Lia Porto
-
Lia Porto takes collage beyond the canvas, using textiles, paint, and paper. Her use of overlapping textures and spontaneous mark-making echoes control, chaos, and shapes found in nature.
