This client had a photo taken on their phone as below of a friends cottage that they wanted to commission into a oil painting.
Brief:
To commission an oil painting by photo of a cottage with all the surrounding details with the exception of changing the sky from the grey sky in the photo with a rainbow to a blue sky similar in colour to the painting in this brief. In addition to adding the two characters over the gate. This photo to commission was a gift for their friends.

Deciding to commission a piece of art is an exciting and creative experience in itself. It’s important to fine tune your idea as much as possible in order for us to be able to provide you with an indication of costs.

What is your budget range? – Your budget will determine the size, materials and experience level of artists we can consider therefore is critical to understand at the outset.
On average, we provide a watercolour painting of a single character on A3 art paper from £150 from a photo, to a reproduction oil painting onto canvas for 91×122 cm for around £500 upwards. Mural/Graffiti artwork starts at £150 per m2 + initial design and materials costs.
What size do you require? – The larger the size the longer it will take and the more materials used.
Common sizes for paintings:
- A1 is 84.1 x 59.4cm (approximately 33×22 inches)
- A2 is 59.4 x 42cm (approximately 22×16 inches)
- A3 is 42 x 29.7cm (approximately 16×12 inches) (the size of the Jackson’s catalogue open)
- A4 is 29.7 x 21cm (approximately 12×8 inches) (the size of the Jackson’s catalogue closed)
- We can create ANY size required, just let us know.
What medium are you after? – Do you want a watercolour, oil or digital medium as an example. View our online guide here for more details.
What is your timeframe? – On average most portrait commissions take around 2-4 weeks to complete from receiving payment.
Payment Terms – Once we agree the costs, we will work with you to refine your brief to create a detailed commission contract. Once you sign this and make payment, the commission will start. You then receive a photo of the initial outline sketch for your feedback and request any amendments before the paint is applied. You will then receive a final photo of the completed commission for approval before shipping.
