Pond Shadows

LAND STEWARDSHIP

Broken Arrow Ranch in the Texas Hill Country is an excellent example of Good Land Stewardship. Although the area is notorious for its dry, rocky soil, this ranch is filled with springs, streams, and ponds. This did not happen overnight, but with responsible and sustainable management encompassing ecological and economic decisions, this land has been preserved and enhanced for future generations. No wonder, with such natural beauty, it is one of my favorite places to paint!

This particular pond runs from the front gate, past one of the ranch houses, becomes a stream, and finally ends up flowing down into a lake at the main house. I have painted in all these areas, but continue to be surprised and delighted by how the light plays over the land. It was late in the afternoon, and as the sun slowly set, the tree behind me lit up the pond! Luckily, I was almost finished with another scene and quickly pivoted to catch this image as well. Inspiration usually comes when you are already working! What moves me to continually want to paint this land and its water is that what has already been said is still not enough.
