I try to walk a line, as a political person, because we are all political beings, even if we shy away from politics. I push the envelope as a citizen/artist, not as often as I’d like to. I restrain myself. But as I survey the current landscape, I find myself wanting more than ever to reflect society, not just to be relevant, to grab attention, but to actually move the dial for those who don’t know how to, but who know they must. I want to amplify those voices who must now be heard, who were beginning to be heard, the softer voices among us being, now shut out by the louder set. My mom and dad taught me to be that person, not born of guilt but by the fire of passion to make the world a better place.
Like many artists, I’m still looking for my voice. To believe one has found it, is a delusion. But with whatever voice I have, shaky as it may be, it must now be rededicated to the truth of this matter, this terrible matter in which society now finds itself. I will henceforth be directing my creative energy toward the white hot center of the truth and in my own small way, make a difference.
