I put together another video from my time in the Lake District. This time I took a bus from Windermere to Keswick, and I went for a walk around Derwentwater. I then took a bus to Ullswater and Aira Force Waterfall. Next day I took a ferry from Windermere to the other side of the lake to see the picturesque Hill Top, the place where Beatrix Potter lived. I spent some time in the orchard there before taking a ferry back to Windermere and catching a train back to London Euston. During my trip I was accompanied by writings of the Chinese writer Chiang Yee compiled in The Silent Traveller in Lakeland which describes his travels in the Lake district during the 1930s. His memories of the Lake District are immensely moving. His views on the nature and landscapes he bore a witness to are deeply poignant. During his trip Chiang Yee experienced tranquility and calmness which allowed him to flee the claustrophobic atmosphere of London of the late 1930s. His writings reflect the anxiety of that era: the impending war in Europe and the conflict in China. The Silent Traveller is illustrated with the writer’s monochromes of the Lake District, painted in the traditional Chinese style. I will dedicate a separate post to The Silent Traveller soon. In the meantime I highly recommend writings by Chiang Yee and I hope you will enjoy this video of my travels in the Lake District.
