I had an excellent bookish week this week, on both the acquisitions and reading front. Some fabulous freebies, in fact all bar one of this week’s additions were free. In the week that I posted about obtaining free books this served as a good example of just how fruitful that can sometimes be. My only actual purchase this week was Before the Swallows Come Back by Fiona Curnow, it’s not a book that has crossed my radar before, but the reviews suggested I’d be daft not to take advantage of the deal.
My other great piece of bookish good fortune this week was finally finding I was once again eligible for the current Kindle Unlimited offer. Kindle Unlimited as I’m sure most of you will know is Amazon’s subscription package which is normally £9.49 a month. Depending on what, and how much you read this is still a pretty good deal. However, the current sale offering is 99p for THREE MONTHS!!! I’ll be looking at this subscription in more detail as part of my Bargain Books features, but just let me say, for 99p, when it includes e-books and audio-books, don’t let this pass you by if you want to give it a try. If you have subscribed before, don’t be put off by the *new subscribers only proviso. It’s worth a click, I’ve been a subscriber numerous times and until this week always got the default message that I wasn’t eligible until I happily was!
My reading choices this week really hit the spot, and you’ll probably see at least one appearing in my end of year ‘best of’ post. I started with Off the Hook by Julie Olivia which was an interesting re-working of the Peter Pan story. Wendy finds herself reluctantly nannying for the local harbour Captain, who’s also the grumpy, reclusive older brother of her ex fiance Peter. An ex for very good reason, not least being because he was incapable of growing up – can you see the theme? Anyway, it was a different take and I was happily on board, we’ve already mentioned previously I’m a sucker for a single dad romance – or in this case single godfather (and I snuck in another later in the week just for good measure).
My next read was The One before the One by Emma Cooper and this is a must read. I was engrossed from the beginning as we meet Liv on her wedding morning. It’s a day she probably never envisaged given that the man she thought was the love of her life disappeared seven years ago, and this was her second chance at love. I can’t say anything without spoiling the plot, which incidentally, has the most perfect piece of misdirection I’ve read in a long time. Ignore the fact it has a sliding doors/time slip element – just go with it, you won’t be disappointed.
Well, my next read This Disaster Loves You by Richard Roper, had another missing partner, seems like buses, seven year absences all come at once. This was a more traditional then and now format which essentially in hindsight portrays the breakdown of a marriage that our left behind partner, Brian, was probably reluctant to acknowledge. It was a bittersweet read, with a great character in Tess, who involves herself in Brian’s search for his missing wife Lily. It has humour which balances the pathos and was another I loved. Happily, I’ve got another couple of books by this author already in my collection so I’ll be reading those sooner rather than later.
I thought I’d go lighter with my next choice, Baby Llama Drama by Kate Watson, it looked like a nice light rom-com – enter cancer, desertion and PCOS and perhaps it had more depth than the cover suggested. Though the cute daughter and added llama & goats helped lighten the mood when it might get a bit sombre. A timely reminder to all the romance naysayers that they’re not all frothy, insubstantial reads. It was still a palate cleanser after my previous two reads.
My final read, is one I’ve been waiting for Wild and Wrangled by Lyla Sage. the Kindle Unlimited offer came just at the right time as this was published on 15th and is part of the package. I’ve really enjoyed my previous outings to the Rebel Blue Ranch and sadly this is the last one. It was time for a hopefully happy ending for Dusty and Cam, the two remaining singletons that are part of the Rebel Blue family. They both have history as they were each others first love and despite 15 years of love, life and a baby in between then and now, that spark never dies for either of them. Give me a cowboy, a second chance and all the swoons and I’m in – a fitting goodbye to Rebel Blue. I’m now looking forward to what the author has up her sleeve going forward.
So that was my bookish week, I hope yours was as fruitful. As we’ve got a long weekend with it being Easter, I hope you have chocolate and books lined up to enjoy. Happy reading and Happy Easter!!

Millie:
I have it all. I work my dream job doing animal-assisted therapy, I live with the four best friends in history, and I own an actual pair of Louboutins. I should be content. Right?
Except, ever since an adorable toddler begged me to be her momma, I want more, and an insta-family is my only chance at motherhood. Unfortunately, her absurdly hot NFL star dad isn’t quite as enthusiastic about me as she is. In fact, if I didn’t know better, I’d think he was avoiding me.
At least until his nanny leaves abruptly mid season. Now, he’s knocking down my door, pleading with me to help watch the little girl I’ve already fallen in love with.
And the more he knocks, the more I’m in danger of falling for him, too.
Duke:
Never get married. Seriously, people, don’t do it.
If you never get married, your influencer wife can’t abandon you and your baby during the middle of your cancer treatments. It doesn’t matter that you kick cancer’s butt or come back to the NFL stronger than ever.
Love is for suckers.
Which is why meeting the intriguing, far too intuitive Millie Campbell is so frustrating. Isn’t it enough that she’s drop dead gorgeous? Does she also have to be the mother of my daughter’s dreams?
Love is a brutal sport, and I have no intention of playing it ever again. But if I do get back in the game, Millie needs to know one thing:
I play for keeps.
