Well, the fact that I haven’t managed to read one book this week tells you all you need to know about my week. The rot set in last week and stayed. I’ve spent the majority of my time at the hospital, including 4 overnight stays. So not only was the environment not conducive to reading, I really didn’t have the inclination. I should also have gone on holiday mid-week but that was also thrown off course. There is though, hopefully, light at the end of the tunnel.

We’ve now got my friend moved into a nursing home and hope that she settles in for as long as is possible. We also, having cancelled our cottage in Ireland, uncancelled it again (good job we deal direct with the owner) and have been rebooking our ferry every couple of days in the hope we can get away. It was scheduled for tomorrow, but that’s not happening so we’re now hoping Tuesday – keep your fingers crossed for us. If we do get away I’d be happy to do nothing but sleep and read.

The plus of the week on a bookish front was discovering that the latest Ali Hazelood Problematic Summer Romance (due 27th) is available as an audiobook co-narrated by my favorite, not to mention, world’s sexiest narrator (it’s official- Goodreads said so!) Eric Nolan. What a time to have a spare Audible credit, that was the fasted pre-order in history. Better still, what a day to hopefully be on a ferry crossing to Ireland listening to his Irish dulcet tones.

Finding Home by Jenn McMahon (free)

But sometimes the heart has a mind of its own. It falls without warning.
The last thing I want to do is fall for the angry cowboy.
Blair Andrews has spent the better part of her adulthood playing trophy wife to her politician husband in San Francisco. All she knows is her pampered, polished, perfect life.

Until it all comes crashing down around her.

After hiding out in her sister’s spare bedroom for months to avoid pitying looks on the streets, she decides it’s time to escape city life and learn to stand on her own.

On a whim, Blair buys a tiny home in a small Wyoming town where she is certain her new neighbor, Griffin Barlow, can’t stand her. He owns the local bar, is constantly covered in dirt from working on his family’s ranch, and never smiles.

Is he grumpy because she infiltrated his privacy when she moved onto the once quiet street? Or is there more to it than that?

Blair has sworn off relationships, leaving the city behind to start fresh and find her independence.

But in Bluestone Lakes, Wyoming, she’s finding more than that.
Maybe…she’s 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚.

Problematic Summer Romance by Ali Hazelwood (Audible pre-order with offer credit 99p)

What is wrong meets what feels right in this romance set in Italy by the Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author of Deep End.

Maya Killgore is twenty-three and still in the process of figuring out her life.

Conor Harkness is thirty-eight, and Maya cannot stop thinking about him.

It’s such a cliché, it almost makes her heart implode: older man and younger woman; successful biotech guy and struggling grad student; brother’s best friend and the girl he never even knew existed. As Conor loves to remind her, the power dynamic is too imbalanced. Any relationship between them would be problematic in too many ways to count, and Maya should just get over him. After all, he has made it clear that he wants her gone from his life.

But not everything is as it seems – and clichés sometimes become plot twists.

When Maya’s brother decides to get married in Taormina, she and Conor end up stuck together in a romantic Sicilian villa for over a week. There, on the beautiful Ionian coast, between ancient ruins, delicious foods, and natural caves, Maya realizes that Conor might be hiding something from her. And as the destination wedding begins to erupt out of control, she decides that a summer fling might be just what she needs – even if it’s a problematic one.

Madame Matisse by Sophie Haydock (99p)

On France’s golden Riviera, the wife of an artist gives him an ultimatum: her or me.

This is the story of three women – one an orphan and refugee who finds a place in the studio of a famous French artist, the other a wife and mother who has stood by her husband for nearly forty years. The third is his daughter, caught in the crossfire between her mother and a father she adores.

Amelie is first drawn to Henri Matisse as a way of escaping the conventional life expected of her. A free spirit, she sees in this budding young artist a glorious future for them both. Ambitious and driven, she gives everything for her husband’s art, ploughing her own desires, her time, her money into sustaining them both, even through years of struggle and disappointment.

Lydia Delectorskaya is a young Russian emigree, who fled her homeland following the death of her mother. After a fractured childhood, she is trying to make a place for herself on France’s golden Riviera, amid the artists, film stars and dazzling elite. Eventually she finds employment with the Matisse family. From this point on, their lives are set on a collision course….

Marguerite is Matisse’s eldest daughter. When the life of her family implodes, she must find her own way to make her mark and to navigate divided loyalties.

Based on a true story, Madame Matisse is a stunning novel about drama and betrayal; emotion and sex; glamour and tragedy, all set in the hotbed of the 1930s art movement in France. In art, as in life, this a time when the rules were made to be broken…
