Book Club And Readalong Series: The Silver Chair


As part of our 2025 Book Club and Readalong series, we’re continuing our reading of The Chronicles of Narnia with The Silver Chair.

This readalong will take place from 27th – 29th March 2025, giving you the perfect time to dive back into Narnia, whether you’re new to this enchanting world or revisiting it after years. Below you’ll find our discussion guide and detailed schedule for our readalong.

As we continue our Chronicles of Narnia book club series, we venture into The Silver Chair, the fourth book in the series (chronologically). This adventure introduces us to Eustace Scrubb once again, joined by a new protagonist, Jill Pole, as they embark on a perilous journey into the wild lands of Narnia in search of the lost Prince Rilian. This story is filled with deep magic, dark secrets, and a powerful message about faith, courage, and resisting deception.

Whether you’re reading for the first time or revisiting an old favourite, this readalong will bring The Silver Chair to life through daily discussions, engaging prompts, and fun challenges!


Readalong Schedule

📅 Day 1 – 27th March: Into Narnia & The Quest Begins

📖 Chapters to Read: 1 – 6

  • Story Prompt: Share your first impressions of Jill and Eustace as protagonists.
  • Discussion Question: How does Aslan’s guidance in the beginning set the tone for the quest ahead? Do you think Jill fully understands the importance of the four signs?
  • Challenge: If you were given a quest in Narnia, what would it be?

📅 Day 2 – 28th March: The Wild Lands & The Giant’s Trap

📖 Chapters to Read: 7 – 11

  • Story Prompt: Share a quote from today’s reading that resonated with you.
  • Discussion Question: How do Jill, Eustace, and Puddleglum navigate the challenges they face in Harfang? What are the consequences of their distractions?
  • Challenge: Describe Narnia’s Wild Lands in five words!

📅 Day 3 – 29th March: The Underworld & The Silver Chair

📖 Chapters to Read: 12 – End

  • Story Prompt: Reflect on the climax of the story—how did you feel about Prince Rilian’s rescue?
  • Discussion Question: The Lady of the Green Kirtle tries to manipulate the group with her enchantment. What does this moment say about deception and resisting temptation?
  • Challenge: If you could bring one item from Narnia into the real world, what would it be and why?

Discussion Questions

  1. How does Jill’s introduction and her interaction with Aslan in the opening chapters shape her journey?
  2. Eustace has changed significantly since The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. How do you see his character growth throughout The Silver Chair?
  3. Puddleglum is an unusual yet beloved character. How does his outlook and attitude influence the quest?
  4. The Lady of the Green Kirtle uses magic and persuasion to try to convince the group that Narnia is not real. How does this reflect broader themes of belief and reality?
  5. What do you think of Prince Rilian’s character? Do you sympathise with his choices and captivity?
  6. How does the theme of following signs and guidance play out in the story? What lessons can be learned from the group’s successes and mistakes?
  7. The Chronicles of Narnia often feature journeys with moral and spiritual undertones. How does The Silver Chair compare to previous books in this regard?
