What I learned from this book: If in doubt, remember horror films!
Description of the book: Horror movie enthusiast Charley is determined to keep a low profile when she’s enrolled at a girls’ boarding school on a remote island. That is, until someone starts killing off her senior class! From elaborate scare tactics to severed heads in fridges, Charley has found herself at the centre of a teen horror movie. And that’s not the only alarming thing that’s happening – she’s now seeing the ghosts of her former classmates!
Haunted by her peers, and with everyone beginning to suspect her, Charley decides to do something about it. She and her only best friend Olive are going to solve the murders and find out who’s killing off the class before graduation. Charley just needs those pesky ghosts to shut up and give her a hand…
How this book made me feel: The spooky season has begun, the days are getting shorter and evenings longer so it is the perfect time for spooky reads. That is why I picked up this book, I wanted something spooky and this book did not disappoint.
The protagonist in this book is Charley and the book is told from her perspective. After the turmoil in her past, Charley enrolled in a girl’s boarding school on a remote island. Her roommate Olive shares a passion for horror films so they become best friends. Everything seems fine until the girls start dyeing and Charley and Olive are the ones who find the bodies. They have the rules of what not to do to survive a horror film, and it seems that after these deaths, they are in one… I liked Charley, she is intelligent but some things seemed like a stretch, and that was seeing the ghosts of those who died.
I liked the narrative of this book, every chapter was educational but linked to the main topic. The topics discussed in this book are bullying, “mean girls” scenarios, friendships, LGBTQ relationships, difficult teenage behaviour, and many more.
I enjoyed the remote setting of the book, and the mood was very well set with plenty of rain and storms. I enjoyed the writing style, it was creative, well thought through and delivered. The chapters are not long, and I wanted to learn more about every “rule” outlined. I liked the book’s ending and can’t wait to read the second book in the series.
So, to conclude, I enjoyed the characters, they were relatable, complex and enjoyable and the plot kept me on my toes till the last page. So if you are looking for a YA horror for the spooky season, do give this book a go and I hope you will like it as much as I did. 🙂
Thank you for your time ❤
