What I learned from this book: Choose your friends wisely.
Description of the book: You probably already know about me. Lucy Chase, the woman who doesn’t remember murdering her best friend. You all think I did it. That’s OK, I get it. Being found wandering the streets covered in her blood wasn’t a great look. Believe me, I’m as frustrated as you are. I’d love to know if I’m a murderer – it’s the sort of thing you really should know about yourself, isn’t it? And now, thanks to true-crime podcast Listen for the Lie, I finally have the chance to find out. But will I be able to live with myself if it turns out it was me? And if it wasn’t, will digging into the secrets of the night I forgot make me the next target of whoever did?
How this book made me feel: I am not a big fan of podcasts and I don’t listen to them, but something about podcast format in books really appeals to me… That was the main reason I picked up this novel, not the sassy Lucy and her commentary… 🙂
The protagonist in this book is Lucy, a very sassy heroine believed to be the murderer of her best friend, the only difficulty there is that she can not remember anything about that night. She goes back to her small hometown where a podcaster is trying to uncover what really happened that night… I really liked the dual storytelling where I could follow Lucy in the present and hear about Lucy and her persona from other people through the podcast interviews. I have to admit, I really liked Lucy because she is funny and intriguing but at the same time, her actions made me question her on multiple occasions.
The plot had me very intrigued, I was curious to find out more about Lucy and her involvement. For me, the present storyline was very messy and chaotic, therefor I enjoyed the podcast elements more because the stories from the past were more intriguing and surprising. The topics discussed in this book were domestic violence, abusive relationships, poor choices, difficult family dynamics, infidelity and many more.
I enjoyed the setting of the book, it felt messy, chaotic and relatable. The chapters were pretty short and I liked how the author concluded this story.
So, in conclusion, this book reminded me of “Sweetpea” by C.J. Skuse with witty and sarcastic characters and an intriguing mystery that I was very keen to unravel. If you are looking for something to make you laugh, do give this book a go and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
Thank you for your time ❤
