Chippenham Parkrun (event 500) « neverimitate

Team Law got together at their home parkrun this week to join the planned celebrations for the venue’s 500th event. There were cakes. There were Easter eggs. First, though, there was a 5km run, jog or walk to complete.

The early morning weather was threatening to dampen the party but in the end the forecast rain mostly held off. A good crowd were gathering as we arrived, a fair few of whom attended the first timers briefing. This was followed by the run director’s briefing although the excited chatter of some participants meant I couldn’t hear most of what was being said despite the megaphone. It was then time to move across to the start where it became clear this was indeed going to be a well attended event.

3-2-1-Go! and the faster runners set off at pace into the distance. As a back of the pack runner I enjoy watching the snake of people climb the hill and stretch out across the top of the park before the leaders lap me on their second circuit. At my more sedate pace I went around the park again before following the river to the second field.

Conditions here were excellent, the slippery mud that is such a feature through the winter months having dried out and the grass not yet long enough to slow those of us with an imperfect running style meaning feet tend to shuffle rather more than lift. It was lovely to see familiar faces as they passed at more impressive speed.

Twice around the field, encouraged as ever by the friendly marshals, and then it was back alongside the river to the park and time for a final effort with the finish funnel now in sight. The funnel was busier than usual but all was dealt with efficiently, tokens handed out and then scanned in the basketball court. Remembering to return the finish token (it’s not a souvenir!) it was then time for cake – thank you to all those who brought along so many delicious baked goods. A quick chat with other participants, a team photo by the pop-up, and it was all done and dusted for another week.

For those who like a few stats, 467 participants passed through the finish funnel. The pack was led by Jack Reddaway in a time of 17:19.

61 people achieved a PB for the venue. Sarah Hutcheson (100) and Zac Tristram (25) each earned the right to wear a new milestone t-shirt.

Heroes of the day were, as ever, the 39 volunteers without whom parkrun cannot happen.

So, well done to the Chippenham core teams over the years for putting on 500 fabulous events – it was lovely to take part in the celebrations. I’ve run a little over 100 of these and will doubtless be back to add to my tally, especially enticing while the second field is in such good condition.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
