My review and thoughts on Chris Haughton’s Little Library

This is a brilliant box set of five Chris Haughton board books! This box is quite heavy with the box set not wrapped in any shrink wrap but the box the books come in is nice thick and sturdy and there are five board books inside: A Bit Lost, Oh No George!, Shh! We Have a Plan, Goodnight Everyone and Don’t Worry Little Crab. Each of these board books is a little smaller than A5 in size and they all have rounded edges and are filled with thick matt pages of Haughton’s brilliant illustrations and text.

Each of the five board books is a brilliant picture book by Chris Haughton with only his most recent two, Maybe… and Well Done, Mummy Penguin not being included. Every book is filled with such fun illustrations and text with each having a key theme colour but very colourful illustrations throughout and each book has a quote by someone famous written on the front or back page too.

The books are:
A Bit Lost – In this story an owl baby falls from its nest while sleeping and wants to find its mum but doesn’t know where she is. An eager squirrel tries to help find the owl chick find its mummy after listening to how the chick describes her, but there are lots of funny mishaps along the way before the chick finally finds what it’s looking for and a very funny last page ending!
Oh no, George! – Harris goes out leaving dog George on his own who promises Harris that he will be good while Harris is out. But while at home George suddenly notices a cake, what will he do? Oh no George! This is still my favourite book by the author with George giving into temptations all around him, but it has such a great ending, brilliant repetition which children will love saying out loud, and again a very funny last page.
Shh! We Have a Plan – In this story four characters are trying to catch a bird but while three of them are trying to be quiet and sneak up on the bird the fourth smaller person tries to speak to the bird instead. They shush him and say they have a plan, but catching the bird isn’t so easy and the three end up in more trouble than they realise. Again very funny, silly and with a good ending.
Goodnight Everyone – This bedtime book isn’t as funny as Haughton’s other stories but has a great amount of repetition with all the animals falling asleep and children can enjoy repeating goodnight to all of them before falling asleep themselves.
Don’t Worry, Little Crab – This is the largest of the board books in terms of page size and follows Little Crab who is travelling with Very Big Crab towards the sea. Little Crab is scared of the large waves of the sea though, and is scared of getting closer, but like with many children, it just takes a bit of encouragement from Very Big Crab and it turns out that Little Crab does enjoy it once he’s tried the experience. Again brilliant, very colourful and with a lovely ending.

The box the books come in is nice and study which is good as these books together are very weighty. But this set is lovely to own, and Haughton’s illustration style is one I really like. Each books is filled with such bold colours and shapes and every story makes you smile, especially the funnier ones like Oh No, George!. It’s definitely a set of books I recommend and the board books are a good size and feel to make reading them easy. Overall I would recommend this Little Library, especially if you have yet to experience any of Haughton’s books, you won’t be disappointed! 🙂
