DARKLY BY MARISHA PESSL

Hardback published by Walker Books 28th November 2024

ISBN 9781529526929

A seemingly ordinary high school student. A mysterious summer internship. And a legendary games designer, now dead.

When an ad for an internship with the Louisiana Veda Foundation appears, Arcadia ‘Dia’ Gannon rushes to apply. Veda’s game-making empire, Darkly, was renowned for its ingenious and terrifying games back in the day and Dia is as obsessed with them as anyone.

The remaining games are priced like highly sought-after works of art, with the rarest and most notorious commanding tens of millions of dollars at auction. Now, Dia is thrust into the enigmatic heart of the operation. But who are these other interns? Why do they all seem to have something to hide? And why was she really chosen? It soon becomes clear that this summer will be the most twisted Darkly game of all.

MY REVIEW

Darkly that is set in 1985, is one those fiction novels that lives up to its title Darkly, and is the most darkly stories I have read. Louisiana Veda, is a young girl creator of a popular Darkly empire of mysterious games, you don’t own the game, it owns you! Louisiana liked to dress up in cloche hats and box pleated skirts, she runs an antique shop. Her website crashes after she puts a strange job opportunity for high school students to earn £2,000 a week with answering a question What Would You Kill For? But what seems that Louisiana has everything running her own lovely antique shop, and has a game website, just what would she kill for? What happens to Louisiana Veda, sent shock waves through me. This is the most twisted story I have ever read.
