Experiences with a Blind Student By Diana Holbourn
Paperback Published by Windy Seaside Publishing 9th November 2024
ISBN 9781738457816
Becky and Barbara also make a new friend, with whom they discuss such topics as how eyewitness evidence can sometimes be unreliable without the eyewitnesses realising, and tricks lawyers can use to try to discredit witnesses in court.
In this mix of serious topics and humour, Becky Bexley is in her second year of university, where she does voluntary work for a new blind student called Barbara who needs people to read her study material to her. They strike up a friendship, often have a laugh together, and Becky meets her brother and some of her disabled friends. They all tell her about their experiences of living with disabilities, a few of them amusing.
Becky gets too argumentative one evening, stirring up a controversy that threatens to ruin Barbara’s meet-up with old school friends. On the bright side, it’s an opportunity for her to learn one or two worthwhile life lessons, although whether she does learn them is open to question.
This book, like the others in the Becky Bexley series, can be read as a standalone as well as a part of the series.
MY REVIEW
I am delighted to read another of my favourite series of books about intelligent Becky Bexley I have been a mega huge fan of author Diana Holbourn, reading every single one of her page-turning Becky Bexley series. I absolutely loved this new fiction story Experiences with a Blind Student for many reasons. My favourite top author, Diana Holbourn who was born blind, has software on her computer with an electronic voice that reads out loud what she is typing and what’s on the screen, so she can access the Internet and confidently write documents. With Diana being blind this has given her the ability to write a marvellous story about a Blind character, also other characters with a disability. Becky Bexley, has been a child genius, from the day she was born. At the age of ten, she is at university, studying psychology and media studies. In Becky’s second year at university, she offers to do some volunteering with students who have disabilities. Becky Bexley is helping a blind student, Barbara, who has an amazing computer with software that has an incredible electronic voice that reads out to her. I’m partly deaf in one ear, which I’m currently waiting for an ears Otology appointment, which I will most probably have to wear an hearing aid, so I absolutely loved reading about the character Susan, who is a bit deaf, who wears hearing aids. Experiences with a Blind Student is very informative and a educational, fiction novel, teaching readers in how a blind person copes with walking outside, from even doing the cores in their own kitchen. The one thing Becky Bexley loves is a good discussion on any topic. Unfortunately for Becky, who loves nothing more but to use her own voice, into lengthy discussions, it leads her to get into an argument with Brenda, who has a guide dog, where she had a bit of trouble with someone, while with her guide dog. It’s typical of Becky she sees the situations in a different way, leading her to a fall out with Brenda. One other person talking in the discussion thinks that you should leave guide dogs alone if you haven’t got permission to touch it, I couldn’t agree more with that. This brilliant novel, with engaging characters, raises disability awareness, which makes this fantastic fiction book a top priority read, for everyone. 🦮👩🏻🦯🦻
