I am delighted to share my review today for I Dreamed of Falling by Julia Dahl. This is the first time I have read anything by this author and I look forward to reading more.

My huge thanks to Tracey at Compulsive Readers for my invitation to join the Blog Tour and for arranging my e-copy of the book from the publisher.

Roman Grady is the sole reporter for the local newspaper in a tiny Hudson Valley town – a town so small that every store opening is considered newsworthy. But when Roman’s longtime girlfriend Ashley, the mother of his four-year-old son, is found dead, he realises he had no idea what was really going on in her life.

And when he starts asking questions, he’s not prepared for the answers.

What was Ashley doing at the cliffside home of her troubled ex-girlfriend? How did no one in a house full of people see what happened to her? And why does it seem like everyone in town suddenly has something to hide? As Roman and his mother dig into Ashley’s last few months, the truths they uncover threaten to expose painful secrets. The kind of secrets that can get you killed.

MY REVIEW

This is the first reading anything by this author and I will be looking at more books from her.

Roman Grady is a small-town reporter in Hudson Valley in the US. He lives with Ashley and they have a son together and lives with his mother and her partner. Roman and Ashley both work and it is his mother that spends most of her time raising their son.

Ashley is out one evening and fails to come home and she is discovered dead. Initially thought as being a suicide as she had struggled with her mental health, but Roman knows this does not fit with what he knows, luckily there is another detective that is willing to delve further.

This is an interesting story as there are several things that are going on in the home life of this family. Ashley’s struggles and her yoga business that is doing well, Roman’s reporting that brings in a modest income and then there son leaving the majority of the childcare to his mother is handy but does she go too far?

As Roman starts to ask questions of people who knew Ashley he starts to discover that things were going on that he never knew anything about. There had been things that
she was looking into and there are a few people that have some answers to his questions, but as you can probably guess, the more he asks the more comes to light.

There are a few characters that have a part to play, some are helpful, others untrustworthy and it just adds to the mystery of Ashley’s death.

This is a mystery thriller and one that involves a police presence but only in a small part. It is more the investigations of Roman that bring the story out into the open. The further the story goes there is a slightly more psychological edge to it. There are several twists and there were a couple that I did not expect. The ending was fitting and felt right, you will understand this when you read it.

This is one for fans of mystery thrillers and it is one I would be happy to recommend.
