The Christmas Book Hunt by Jenny Colgan

Nothing better than a light festive short story to ease the bustle of Christmas. This offering also includes something literary-themed, a book hunt, no less. Plus a nice seasonal cover with snow, a Christmas tree and wreath, and couple of English landscape features such as a red telephone box and Big Ben. Charming.

The story is about a race against time to find a beloved children’s book before a very old lady passes away. She is terminally ill but remains philosophical and upbeat. The task is given to her great-niece with the (unrequested) help of a young man who looks like an attractive Dracula. But all is not as it seems.

The book search goes from London to the literary haven of Hay-on-Wye, through the Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland and eventually at Edinburgh, with fine descriptions of the beautiful city and its bookish past. Great insight into the rare books industry (obviously that’s where the baddies are!) Plenty of literary name dropping too.

This is an easy to read book, pleasant, not romance-driven but definitely bookish, which makes a nice change to the typical feelgood Christmas short stories. The kind of tale that will appeal to many readers. Good stuff.
