Christopher J. Stockwell
This is a world of living with many vices of good and bad and learning to make proper choices. This is one book that encompasses three novels by Christopher J. Stockwell. The major character of Jack is in all three of these books is a person who suffers from mental illness and seems to prefer this kind of life till he supposedly hits skid row. Jack has friends and family, but he feels that he needs to work out his own devils that he is living with and trying to make proper decisions and choices for himself from his childhood to his adulthood.
Christopher J. Stockwell has written ‘The Complete Down and Out in Seattle and Tacoma series’ where Jack is working through his issues and his many odd relationships that is affecting him personally and professionally. Christopher through all three novels shows the steps that Jack must take to help himself and if anyone who suffers form many forms of mental illness and thinks that drugs, alcohol and sex are the way to solve these personal and professional issues. To be honest Jack is everyman to a point who needs to learn to understand the why he acts and way he acts. This would be a good discussion group book for substance abusers to learn what and how he gains self-respect.
Charles Bukowski’s L.A. is an alcohol-induced blackout, Irvine Welsh’s Edinburgh is a blue-faced overdose. Stockwell’s Seattle is a medically-prescribed nightmare. The down and out series takes you there and shows you the view you can only get from the sidewalk.
Transgressive author Christopher J. Stockwell’s absurdist and satirical take on transgressive fiction goes beyond the confined by norms paradigm and into the gutter. Enjoy
