Hello everyone,
My look back on what I have read in 2024 continues here with the five most character-driven books. I find this a really fun and unique category, as it makes me reflect on certain books in a slightly different way than what I did at the time.
There are few things better than building a connection with a particular narrator or set of characters. When complimented by a good plot, it really adds to the experience of reading the book to see the world through their compelling eyes.
The five books on this list were not all perfect, but the fact they were character-driven was among their biggest strengths. Let’s get straight to it!
The Maid by Nita Prose
So much of this book is based around the voice and perspective of the title character Molly. It is an interesting character study as a lot of the story is based on how innocent she is as a person, cherished by her friends but also exploited by others. Although there were many aspects of the book I did not like, Molly’s point of view certainly made it quite unique.
That Bonesetter Woman by Frances Quinn
There are some similarities between this one and The Maid, with both books focusing on unconventional female protagonists with a not altogether different view of the world. However, That Bonesetter Woman is a historical fiction rather than a mystery, and is told in the third person. It is also – in my opinion – a much better book!
I really loved this one, and a lot of it was down to the character of Durie, whose kind heart and single-mindedness made her somebody to root for.
The Forest Of Stolen Girls by June Hur
There might be an intriguing mystery at its centre, but so much of the story here is about the relationship between the main character and her family. Hwani idolises her missing father and wants to solve crimes in the same manner that he did, while she also wants to reconcile with her sister. They eventually investigate the disappearances together and it makes for powerful reading.
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng
This is a family drama in its entirety, one which centres on the death of the Lee’s eldest daughter Lydia and explores themes of racial prejudice. As it jumps between timelines, it is an in-depth portrayal with characters who are so well defined and compelling, that there was a lot to admire in spite of the slow moving plot.
The Household by Stacey Halls
It was impossible to exclude this one from the list! While it has an interesting and quite gripping plotline, the way it tells the story of all the women connected to Urania Cottage is easily the standout aspect and a lot of it is quite moving. Through multiple perspectives, we get to know the fallen women and their warden, along with the real-life character of Angela Burdett-Coutts. Of all the characters, Martha was my favourite.
