Sandra has been reading Dancing In The Moonlight by Lynne Shelby.
I’ve enjoyed other books by Lynne Shelby, so was excited to read Dancing in the Moonlight when it was offered to Rosie’s Book Review Team. There is so much more to this than just a second-chance romance. Set in the world of musical theatre, we learn how a West End production is put together. I’m not even a fan but still found this insight fascinating. It has long been Nell’s dream to dance in a West End show, and this is probably her last chance as she is a bit older than the other cast members. She passes the audition but it means working with someone from her past that she never expected to see again. The choreographer of the show, Finn Harris, is the father of her nine-year-old daughter, Savannah, but he left to work in Germany ten years previously and never knew she was pregnant.
The cast of characters are vividly drawn, not all of them are sympathetic, but Nell’s kind nature shines through when she shares her expertise with and supports the younger members of the cast, especially newcomer Florence. Savannah is delightful, in some ways mature for her age, and determined to be a dancer just like her mother. The author paints a picture of how gruelling the life of a professional dancer is, and how important it is that they function as a team and support each other.
Despite all the years they have spent apart, the connection between Nell and Finn is still strong. As they grow close again, she will have no choice but to tell him about their daughter, but how will he react? Told from Nell’s point of view, we have no idea what is going through Finn’s mind which increases the tension, and the reader has no idea how it will all end. I loved reading this emotional and heartwarming story, and look forward to reading her next book.
Book Description:
When dancer Nell Avery auditions for Speakeasy, a new West End musical, she is shocked to discover that the choreographer is Finn Harris, a man she never expected to see again.
Ten years ago, Nell and Finn had a casual, no-strings fling. He left London to work abroad. Nell found herself pregnant.
Having made the decision to raise her child alone, Nell didn’t tell Finn that he was the father, a secret easy for her to keep while he was hundreds of miles away. But now Finn is back – and he offers Nell a role in Speakeasy’s cast.
Nell knows if she takes the job she risks Finn finding out her secret, with unimaginable consequences for the life she has made for herself and her daughter, Savannah. But Speakeasy could be Nell’s only chance of dancing on a West End stage – the dream she’s had ever since she first put on a pair of tap shoes. How can she give up her dream?
Nell accepts the role, telling herself that all she has to do is keep away from Finn . . .
