Last week, I started an unforgettable trip from Copenhagen to Interlaken in Switzerland—a special 24-hour journey through Europe’s changing landscapes. I left Copenhagen at 3 PM, traveling through Denmark during the day. As I settled into my seat, I watched how the view outside transformed from the flat, peaceful Danish countryside to the green, rolling hills of Germany. Finally, I saw the stunning Alps. Each scene was like a beautiful painting, making me appreciate the joy of travel in a way that doesn’t often happen when flying.

Traveling by train is more than just getting somewhere; it’s a journey in every way. I was relaxed by the rhythmic sound of the train wheels on the tracks, and the gentle rocking helped me drift into a light sleep. The sound became a calming background as I dreamed of the adventures ahead. When I woke up, the sun was rising, casting golden light over the scenery, and I enjoyed the breathtaking view of the sunlit Alps.

As I had breakfast with an amazing view, I thought about the people around me—fellow travelers experiencing this together. In a world where our interactions are often quick and shallow, sharing a meal on the train allowed us to have real conversations and connections. We shared stories, laughter, and smiles, creating wonderful memories to hold onto. There was something truly special about this shared atmosphere—no rush, no barriers, just people connecting in the simplest way. After breakfast, I took the last train from Basel to Interlaken, ending my remarkable journey.

The Cost of Adventure

Interrail 1st Class Global Pass (8 days): 412 EUR
Night train from Hamburg to Zurich (2nd class sleeper compartment, each way): 299 EUR x 2
Total: 1,010 EUR

For my trip from Copenhagen to Interlaken, I chose an Interrail 1st Class Global Pass with 8 travel days. This pass allowed me to travel easily between several countries in Europe, making my experience enjoyable and simple. Choosing 1st Class gave me more comfort and space on the longer journeys, which improved the overall travel experience.

Additionally, I purchased a 2nd Class sleeper compartment for the overnight train with Nightjet, which cost 299€ each way. It turned out to be a fantastic investment, allowing me to travel overnight and wake up in a new country, ready for new adventures. Sleeping aboard the train, gently rocked by the rhythm of the tracks, added a unique dimension to my journey.

Train vs. Flight – An Eye-Opening Comparison:

When considering transport, I was struck by the differences between train and flight:

Travel Time: Train 24 hours vs. flight approx. 5 hours (including transportation to airports)
Price: Train 1,010 EUR vs. flight approx. 300-400 EUR for a round trip
CO2 Emissions:
• Train (round trip): 88.8 kg CO2
• Flight (round trip): 446 kg CO2
• Savings with train: 357.2 kg CO2

To put that into perspective, the average European emits around 1,000 kg CO2 annually from meat consumption alone. By choosing the train, I was able to drastically reduce my carbon footprint—an act that felt profoundly rewarding. While the flight may seem to win in speed and price, I found myself valuing the time spent nurturing my soul over simply reaching a destination.

This journey served as a powerful reminder of the impact our choices have on the environment. I dreamed of a future where the EU invested heavily in night trains, making them a viable and attractive option compared to flights. How wonderful it would be if we could climb aboard a train at sunset, drift off to sleep, and awaken to the promise of new adventures!

Jungfraujoch: The Top of Europe

No trip to Switzerland is complete without visiting Jungfraujoch, often called the “Top of Europe.” This incredible place is famous for its breathtaking views and high altitude. To get there, I hopped on a train that took me through the heart of the stunning Alps. The journey to Jungfraujoch typically takes about 2.5 to 3 hours from Interlaken, depending on connections and the specific train route you choose.

As the train climbed higher, I was amazed by the sight of snow-covered mountains and beautiful landscapes unfolding outside my window. It truly felt like entering a fairy tale, with glaciers stretching as far as I could see and the crisp mountain air refreshing my spirit. The round-trip ticket cost around 100 to 150 CHF (Swiss Francs), depending on the season and whether you have a rail pass, making it a worthwhile investment for the unforgettable experience awaiting at the summit.
The trainride from Grindelwald Terminal takes 45 minutes to reach the top and goes through a dark tunnel inside of the mountain with a 5 minutes break halfway through to enjoy the view.

Jungfraujoch is not just a beautiful destination; it also has an interesting history. The train journey to this summit started in the early 1900s, making it one of the top attractions in Switzerland. At Jungfraujoch, I visited Europe’s highest railway station, which is a marvel in itself. Standing there, surrounded by the spectacular scenery, was an unforgettable experience.

Don’t forget to pack some snacks, as the altitude is quite high, and it can make you feel a bit dizzy at times.

Grindelwald-Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg

Next on my adventure list was skiing at Grindelwald-Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. With my gear on and excitement pumping through me, I made my way down the beautiful slopes, surrounded by amazing views of the Alps. The thrill of gliding down the hills and feeling the fresh, cold air was incredible. I soaked in the breathtaking scenery as I skied, enjoying every moment of the experience.

After an exhilarating day of skiing, I found the perfect spot to warm up at the Hotel Restaurant Bellevue des Alpes. Nestled in a stunning location with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, it was an inviting retreat from the cold. I settled into a comfortable chair on the terrace, enjoying the cozy ambiance that made me feel right at home.

As I ordered a rich hot chocolate, I could already taste the warmth spreading through me. When it arrived, it was simply delightful—smooth and creamy, topped with a swirl of whipped cream. Sipping my hot chocolate while gazing at the magnificent Alps made it a truly magical moment. It was the ideal way to recharge my energy before heading back out to the slopes!

Kayaking on Brienzersee: A Serene Escape

One of the standout moments of my journey was the adventure of kayaking on Brienzersee. As I made my way to the lake, the anticipation built with every step. Known for its stunning turquoise waters framed by towering mountains, Brienzersee is a gem waiting to be explored.

It was quite windy that day, so we couldn’t venture too far out on the lake. Instead, we had a blast surfing on the waves while wearing our dry suits. Even though we stayed close to shore, the excitement of riding the waves made for a fun and memorable time on Brienzersee!

SALZANO Hotel

After a day filled with adventure and exploration, I arrived at SALZANO Hotel with eager anticipation for a culinary experience that celebrated the flavors of Switzerland. Situated in the heart of Interlaken, this charming hotel is renowned not only for its elegant ambiance but also for its delightful menu that showcases local specialties.

As I stepped into the SALZANO Hotel restaurant, I was immediately welcomed by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The decor combined modern elegance with rustic charm, creating a cozy space that felt perfect for relaxing after a day of kayaking and sightseeing. The soft lighting and gentle hum of conversation added to the charm, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience.

This family-owned hotel is run by two active generations: the father, who is half Italian, skillfully crafts fresh pasta in the kitchen, while the son manages the daily business. Their passion for food is evident in every dish.

I was greeted by attentive staff who guided me through a menu bursting with tempting options inspired by the region’s culinary traditions. I couldn’t wait to dig into the freshly made pasta, which was a highlight of the meal and a true reflection of the family’s commitment to quality.s.

Day Spa at Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa

After days of exploring, I decided to relax at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa, a popular spot for both locals and hotel guests. Located at the foot of the Alps, this spa is known for its inviting atmosphere and great wellness facilities.

One of the highlights is the warm outdoor pool. Swimming outside while surrounded by beautiful mountains was a wonderful experience. The spa also features a shared steam room and sauna, which is quite traditional in this part of Europe. In these areas, bathing suits aren’t allowed, so it offers a unique and authentic experience.

But don’t worry if you prefer more privacy—there are also separate saunas and steam rooms for men and women. Each space provides a relaxing environment to unwind and take care of yourself.

As I enjoyed the warmth and tranquility of the spa, I felt all my stress melting away. My time at the Victoria-Jungfrau was a perfect way to recharge, reminding me how important it is to take a break and relax during my travels.
