Quick Answer: The Best Family Accommodation Perth
Where to Stay in Perth with Kids
Choosing where to stay in Perth will depend on what your family likes to do on your holiday, along side your budget and family size.
While many first time travellers to Western Australia will look to stay in the Perth CBD, there are actual more options available throughout the Metropolitan region. In case you didn’t know, the Perth Metro extends for 158km along the coastline, meaning there are heaps of areas to see and explore!
To help you understand the layout of Perth Metro and this guide, the metropolitan region is commonly split into 3 sections. The CBD is in the centre and then we have South of River and North of River, split by the Swan River that runs through the centre of the region.
My top pick areas for families to stay in would be Fremantle, Mandurah and Scarborough! These areas offer great kid-friendly accommodation options as well as lots to do for the whole family!
But no matter where in Perth you choose to stay, you’ll easily be able to find plenty of free things to do with kids!
Perth Central
Perth Central is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a short stay before heading out to explore more of Western Australia. Here you’ll find accommodation options range from the budget backpackers through to high end luxury, so there is an option for every traveller.
If you’re staying in Perth central, its a great area to enjoy the highlights of Perth City such as Kings Park, Elizabeth Quay, the Matagarup Bridge and Yagan Square. From here you can easily access areas such as Northbridge, South Perth and Subiaco – I’ve included some accommodation options from these areas.
South of River
Generally speaking, the South of River (the Swan River) areas are more popular for families and is considered a more laid-back area. Here you’ll find plenty of family friendly playgrounds (Australia has some of the BEST playgrounds in the world!). Your kids will love the historic city of Fremantle, cruising the canals in Mandurah and walking along the foreshore in Rockingham!
Fremantle
Fremantle is the best place to stay in for a mix of history, culture and markets. There are also some incredible beaches in the area and it’s a great base for the ferry if you’re planning a trip to Rottnest Island.
Mandurah
While technically not part of the Perth metropolitan region, Mandurah is only just beyond the most southern point and is located between the metro and the South West region. As a local, Mandurah is a place we visit often and love to cruise the canals, walk the foreshore and enjoy the great cafes and restaurants on offer!
North of River
The North of River area is often considered a more lively with a greater variety of beaches to enjoy. From the Scarborough night markets, Hillary’s Boat Harbour (and AQWA) to the iconic Cottesloe beach, you’ll have plenty of things to do and see if you choose to stay north of the Swan River.
Scarborough
Scarborough is great place to stay if you’re after easy access to the beach. It makes for a great family friendly place to base yourself, especially if you hire a car to have access to the rest of Perth.
Joondalup & Hillarys
The City of Joondalup is the furthest north you can stay within the Perth metro. As one of the biggest cities within the metro, it has a large variety of accommodation options to offer for families looking to stay in the north of Perth. Hillarys is located just south of Joondalup and
Swan Valley
I’ve also added in the Swan Valley as an additional place to stay in Perth, Western Australia. This region is well known for its vineyards, galleries and breweries. There are also lots of kid-friendly things to do in the area, including Caversham Wildlife Park, mini-golf and several easy hikes.
If you’re staying in this area in Autumn, you’ll also be closely located to some of the best spots to see autumn leaves in Perth!
We’ve actually stayed at Maya Maya twice and highly recommend it! The on-site restaurant is great and the grounds are so lovely to walk around.
How to Get Around Perth
If you choose to stay in any of the central areas of Perth, as well as Fremantle, you’ll find that you can easily get around using the Public Transport system. However, if you’re planning on staying in the areas further out, like Mandurah, Scarborough or the Swan Valley then, you’ll definitely want to consider hiring a car to get around. I’d recommend using Discover Cars to find a car hire option!
You’ll definitely want to hire a car if you plan on doing any day trips around Perth or exploring areas like The Margaret River Region.
How Much Does Accommodation in Perth Cost?
You’ll find that Perth offers a wide range of accommodation options at different price points, that will fluctuate depending on the time of year and the area of Perth you choose to stay in. However, as a general guide you’ll find most standard hotels cost around $250 per night.
Apartment style hotels (which are a great option for families) will often offer more competitive prices as well as additional space and facilities. If you’re travelling with kids and looking for affordable accommodation in Perth you’ll definitely want to consider this!
I’ve included a price indicator on each accommodation option to help you find where to stay in Perth for your budget.

Overall
Overall, if you’re visiting Perth for the first time, the best area to stay is in the Perth central area at a hotel like Mercure Perth. However, if you’ve been to Perth before than you should consider venturing further out to areas like Fremantle, Scarborough and Mandurah!
If you’re visiting Perth on a budget with your kids, your family should consider staying in any one of the apartment options in the area you’d like to explore most! Alternatively, you should consider staying in a hotel that’s in the best location for your family.
