2024-2025 has been an amazing figure skating season that culminated with Boston Worlds Championships in March I was lucky to watch live at the arena! Next year I plan to attend the ultimate figure skating competition – at the Milan winter Olympics 2026. I am a lifelong Olympic enthusiast but this will be my first Olympics trip (I enjoyed visiting several Olympic venues over the years).
The season was over way too soon and I could not miss seeing some of my favorite stars one more time this season in the Stars on Ice show at the Skating Club of Boston (practically in my back yard) at the end of May.
While I still prefer the energy of competition over an Exhibition figure skating show, my friend and I enjoyed a beautiful Rock-themed evening choreographed my stars of the past- Alyssa Czisny and Kurt Browning.
What I loved the most about the show:
Seeing my favorite stars (on ice!)
The show included three of the four current World Champions: Ilia Malinin (men singles), Alysa Liu (ladies) and Madison Chock and Evan Bates (ice dance). That is some major star power! There were also Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito – two ladies I routed for all season (Isabeau performed her competition number Breakfast at Tiffany – my favorite program of the season).
While Ilia Malinin (who is capable of performing all 7 quadruple jumps) did not attempt any of the quads in the show, there were plenty of twists and flips in his performance to ooh and ahh about!
Discovering the Ice Dancing!
I have to admit that Ice Dancing is my least favorite discipline of the four, but during the show I developed a new appreciation for it. I was no longer struggling to understand the scoring for required elements and just enjoyed the synergy and artistry of the (three time World Champions) Madison Chock and Evan Bates. In fact, it was Maddy and Evan who were number one discovery for me at the show.
Being Surprised!
While you are seeing the same competitive program many times in the season, you don’t know what’s coming at the show! Maddy’s sexy dancing with Keegan, Elvis Stojko* absolutely killing it in the Boys are Back in Town number with Keegan Messing and Satoko Miyahara (2015 and 2018 World Medalist) going all out (of her comfort zone?) as Cher in all-cast closing medley.
*Elvis is of course the 3-time (94-95-97) World Champion, but I haven’t seen him perform in years and was blown away by his athleticism and charisma.
My friend Sveta (who does not usually follow the competitive figure skating season) absolutely loved all the tricks and dazzling staging and choreography. For those of us die-hard fans who follow the season closely, it was too- an amazing evening of rediscovering your favorite stars – in the city near you.
Figure Skating season 2025-2026 will start soon for me at the Cranberry Cup hosted by the Skating Club of Boston in August. My next live event will be Skate America-25 Grand Prix in Lake Placid, NY (I reported live from Lake Placid’s Skate America 2017).
