A VITAL PART OF GOAL SETTING – THE EXPRESSIONER

If you desire to be intentional about setting goals and realizing them, you should get familiar with visioning because, it is a process that should take place before goal setting.

Visioning entails coming to terms with where one is and where one hopes or desires to get to realistically.

Visioning is slightly different from vision. A vision is a place one aspires or desires to get to. A feat one foresees or a destination that is craved.

Visioning is the process where visions are created or defined based on desires, values, hope, belief, knowledge, and purpose. It serves the purpose of outlining what a person desires to achieve.

The outcome of this exercise often leads to situation analysis (trying to find out where a person currently is), planning, forecasting and decision making.

Once you are able to identify and accept that there is a gap between where you are now and where you desire to be, your line of thought should now be

“What can I do to reach or get closer to my vision?”

Ideally, this is the process that should influence goal setting.

At this point, the goals you set should then be based on the outcome of your visioning exercise and a desire to materialize your vision.

Set goals that will help accomplish your vision. Goals that align with your vision.

Take time to ask yourself, where do I really want to be? How do I want things to be for me? What do I want to achieve or accomplish?

What can I do to contribute to my success? What can I do to help realize my vision?
What would it require?

The answers may take time to come but persist until you discover something. If need be, seek help from subject matter experts.

When you discover what you can do, let that discovery inform the goals you set for yourself.

Visioning should be an activity that is carried out before goals are set. This will ensure that your goals correlate with your vision.
