Touching Hem – adaughtersgiftoflove

I found this lovely picture on Canva. We are all familiar with the story of the woman with the issue of blood and that she touched the hem of His garment but lets look at the story.

As Jesus was saying this, the leader of a synagogue came and knelt before him. “My daughter has just died,” he said, “but you can bring her back to life again if you just come and lay your hand on her.”

So Jesus and his disciples got up and went with him. Just then a woman who had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding came up behind Him. She touched the fringe of His robe, for she thought, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.”

Jesus turned around, and when he saw her He said, “Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was healed at that moment.

Matthew 9:18-22 New Living   https://biblehub.com/nlt/matthew/9.htm

Now, I didn’t use all the verses, you can read it for yourself. Notice that the story starts with a leader of the synagogue asking Him to raise  his daughter from the dead. That story continues after the woman is healed, after she has pushed through the crowds, risking her her life, possibly arrest as she would have been considered unclean. She had tried everything, spent all her money on doctors, and yet, was still bleeding. We may not know how, exactly but it was probably going to be fatal if she bled profusely.

There were no transfusions or ways to stop hemorrhaging in those days. Though some think it was hemophilia, it was probably menstrual, making her weak and anemic. It was not stopping for seven days for her to be clean. Just like today, she may have had fibroid tumors that occasionally, leaked. But she had thought or even said aloud as she heard the crowds in the street, ” If I touch the hem of His garment, I will be healed. ” That was her faith talking, it had to outweigh her fears, and off she went. There are so many beautiful points in these two women, one only twelve, had died, before a bat mitzvah, the other had been sick for twelve years and about two. Jesus had a choice to make and did it in a way that people of the Jewish teaching would understand.

Jairus was told by his servants not to trouble the Master, Jesus looked beyond his title and their doubt. He probably saw that he was not wearing a talit, he would have wrapped the girl in it and prayed for her. I can’t say that for sure but it is the cloak, garment, prayer shawl that was touching the daughter and that the daughter would touch at Jesus feet. The girl was touching her father and and the heavenly Father through Jesus raised her from the dead. The woman touch Jesus, the hem, and the Father as well because He said that the were one. Power was in Him, on Him and through Him, and though he felt it go out at her touch,  by the time He reach Jairus home, it was refreshed.

It wasn’t the talit or shawl itself, it was the natural touching the supernatural. It was faith, a little that grew, and the unbelief that Jairus asked Him to help Him overcome. We all have to grow our faith, water it with the Word. Jesus was that Word sent to heal, Psalm 103:20. He had been made flesh and dwelt among them, John 1:1.

This woman is nameless, though I gave her one in another post, as an example that we can relate to. Jesus called her daughter, the only one He did. She knelt before Him a Jewess, just as Jairus did, and a painting of her story appears in the Roman catacombs. A newer 1998 version shows it at foot level and that she barely touch Him, or the hem. It is titled, The Encounter ” by Daniel Cariola.

I want you to see the similarities, both daughters, both touching prayer shawls, their father/ Father, both being raised and walking with Jesus. The twelve years of life and almost death, both surrounded by crowds but needing Jesus. It is even possible that their afflictions were similar in nature, puberty and menopausal. While the women would have been ignored, not having close contact with family or friends fearing they too would become unclean, the girl was surrounded by mourners within minutes.

I have had problems with this. I’m sure many of you have. It can cause pain, problems, infection and does make you feel physically unclean. Jesus’ touch makes our spirit clean and we don’t want to figuratively miscarry our fruit, nor literally. Not being a  doctor, I could not say how much this affects a woman’s ability to have children. It may be some other condition. But let me pray for you today, and we can kneel before Him touching the hem of His garment as believer, daughters, and it our faith in His power and name, His blood that was shed after these encounters, that makes us clean and whole.

Whatever, your sickness, disease of infirmity, Go to the doctor, Jesus said the sick needed them. Luke was a doctor. But keep that faith in Him, touch the hem, touch Him. He will touch you. It is one of my favorite hymn and be made whole in Jesus. Let Him speak life and healing over you and agree, I believe with you today and praise Him, in Jesus name, Amen.
