Yesterday, as I helped my toddler get dressed for the day’s activities, she eagerly reminded me that she’s becoming a big girl and could do it on her own. Though i knew this would prolong our departure time, i took a backseat and let her dress herself.

Despite her shoes being on the wrong feet and her clothes being a bit turned around, her effort and determination were praiseworthy and provided me with a clear sign that change is on the horizon. One day, she will get fully dressed all by herself. One day, she will grow more independent, and she will become her own person.

Watching my child grow into an independent little one has prompted me to reflect on those early days and how far she and I have come. While we still face many challenging moments, parenting today is undeniably easier than when my daughter was an infant. I still remember the first few days after me and my kiddo arrived home from the hospital. There was one night that was a particular struggle. I was up at 2 AM, pacing my bedroom with a crying baby in my arms. I was mentally and physically burned out.

In that moment, I felt completely defeated. The world outside seemed so distant. It was as if I was the only person awake on the planet. Tears streamed down my face as I wondered if I was doing anything right. It felt like an utterly helpless situation.

Each day presents new challenges and triumphs. You might find yourself cherishing the peaceful moments of watching your baby sleep, and their tiny fingers curling around yours. Yet, these serene instances are often punctuated with sleepless nights, leaving you to battle exhaustion while trying to console a crying infant. The first time your baby rolls over, sits up, or utters those magical first words can fill you with unparalleled pride. Yet, in tandem with these joys, there are moments of fear and uncertainty—like the first fever or the constant questioning of whether you’re doing things “right.”

A few months ago, I hit a serious bump in the road and found myself in the ER. Life’s pressures had piled heavily on me: caring for my ailing father, helping my mother prepare for a vital surgery, nursing a sick child, juggling a demanding job, running a business, and dealing with a Covid-19 diagnosis all at once. Lack of sleep and proper meals led to a full-blown breakdown. The fatigue was debilitating. It was tough, but that moment became a crucial turning point. It taught me the vital importance of finding balance, no matter what life throws my way.

My recent experience taught me the importance of setting realistic expectations for myself and communicating my needs. Prioritizing is not just a skill; it’s a necessity!

It’s okay to acknowledge that some days, work might take the front seat, while other days, family needs more of your attention. Sometimes, the house won’t be spotless, and emails might go unanswered for a few hours, but that’s perfectly fine. It’s all a learning process, and it’s okay to ask for help. What’s important is finding what works for you and being kind to yourself in the process. The goal isn’t to achieve a perfect balance every day, but to find a rhythm that works for you and your family over time.

Self-doubt is an all-too-familiar feeling that creeps into the life of every parent at some point. Whether it’s questioning if you made the right choice about your child’s diet, doubting your discipline methods, or second-guessing how you handle their emotional needs, the list of potential uncertainties feels endless.
