Liverpool could turn their attention to Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon if Luis Diaz leaves the club this summer.
The Reds will not be breaking the bank to sign Alexander Isak and are instead going for Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike. Liverpool are accelerating a move to sign the French star for around £87m although Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will do their best to bring that price down.
Ekitike is sure to be a significant upgrade on the frustrating Darwin Nunez although there remains some uncertainty given the Frankfurt star’s lack of extensive experience operating as an elite striker.
Like Nunez before he joined Liverpool, he has only one season with truly remarkable numbers unlike Florian Wirtz, who has proven across several seasons that he’s worth the money.
And unfortunately, Gordon falls into the same bracket.
Liverpool could return for Anthony Gordon if Luis Diaz gets his transfer this summer
According to talkSPORT chief football correspondent Alex Crook, a move to sign Gordon depends heavily on whether or not Luis Diaz gets the transfer he is agitating for.
Crook reports: “Both Barcelona and Bayern Munich are keen to prise Diaz away from Merseyside with the latter having a bid of around £60m rejected.
“While Liverpool’s briefing is that Diaz is not for sale, he is pushing for the move to Germany and Bayern are ready to make an improved offer.
“Liverpool know Bayern were willing to pay €100m for Wirtz and if their bid gets anywhere near that figure, I believe they would cash in.
“If Diaz is sold then Liverpool retain an interest in Anthony Gordon having come close to signing the England winger from Newcastle last summer.”
The report also names Rodrygo as a potential replacement but it’s safe to say the Brazilian would be a much more appropriate for the money Newcastle want for Gordon. A report from Football Insider claims the Magpies want at least £100m for the Scouser.
Frankly, it would be irresponsible to spend so much money on a player that last season provided six goals and six assists in the Premier League last season despite playing 2,446 minutes.
For reference, Darwin Nunez – the player that Liverpool fans unanimously agree isn’t good enough – got five goals and three assists in less than half the game time.
Gordon is a good player but he’s certainly not a £100m player by any means.
