Indian-Origin IIIT-H Alum Yash Kumar Leads OpenAI’s Breakthrough ‘ChatGPT Agent’

Indian-origin techies continue to display their abilities in handling high-end projects and hold key positions in reputed positions in tech giants.

Yash Kumar, one of the creative minds steering OpenAI’s next big leap in AI, ChatGPT Agent, is another techie with his roots in India. He pursued Computer Science at IIIT Hyderabad, one of India’s top engineering institutes in India. During a briefing with The Verge, Yash and research leader Isa Fulford listed out the capabilities of the newly launched tool. ChatGPT Agent has access to “an entire computer”, not just the browser, Yash said.

According to the company, ChatGPT Agent is a tool that can complete tasks using its own “virtual computer”, built on a model OpenAI exclusively developed for this purpose. The tool can do everything from checking a user’s calendar and summarizing meetings to helping plan a family breakfast. It can be a virtual personal assistant completely helping you to sort out your day-to-day activities. Yash told The Verge that now, they are working on optimizing for hard tasks, so that users can have a smooth experience using the tool.

Fulford said that before ChatGPT Agent takes any action, like sending an email or making a booking, it checks with you first. The model powering this new tool is more capable than previous versions. In November 2023, he joined OpenAI and now works out of the Company’s San Francisco headquarters, according to LinkedIn. Special safeguards originally designed for scenarios involving “high biological and chemical capabilities have been turned on, OpenAI clarified.
