Mayralborn Syiem flags overcharging by private hospitals, urges greater MHIS enrolment

Shillong, July 18: Nongpoh MLA and member of the Meghalaya State Health Advisory Board, Mayralborn Syiem, has acknowledged that while the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) is a significant initiative by the state government, key challenges remain—particularly the high charges levied by private hospitals.

“MHIS is one of the initiatives taken by the government. But it is not entirely under the government’s control to regulate pricing in private hospitals,” Syiem said.

Drawing a parallel to open market dynamics, he added, “It’s like we are talking about the mandis—where vegetables may sell for ₹10 per kg in one area and ₹20 in another. There is a similar imbalance in healthcare costs.”

He expressed concern over the rising number of private hospitals that overcharge patients. “We have seen many entrepreneurs come up with private hospitals and overcharge, which is a huge concern,” he noted.

Syiem highlighted the government’s effort to include select hospitals under the MHIS coverage.

“The government has empanelled hospitals to be part of the MHIS network. This was a very positive step taken years ago. But such policy matters need detailed discussions to ensure that citizens—especially from low-income backgrounds—don’t face unnecessary hardship,” he said.

Urging eligible individuals to enrol in the scheme, Syiem noted that fear of overbilling often discourages participation. “I have seen it myself—there are families who refrain from enrolling. When overbilling happens, it becomes difficult for them. But having the MHIS card is a great help,” he added.

On the broader issue of healthcare accessibility and quality, Syiem said, “The government is trying its best to improve healthcare facilities. There are challenges, but patients are being treated—maybe not 100%, but services are being provided in Civil Hospital, NEIGRIHMS, and various district hospitals as much as possible.”
