Developer Wargaming has announced they’re shutting down Steel Hunters, their recently launched PvPvE mech action game.
Steel Hunters was launched via early access back in April via Steam and was touted as a “polished foundation” of the game. Now, the game is already shutting down months later.
“Today we share difficult news: we’ve made the decision to sunset Steel Hunters,” the team said in an update. “You’ve given us so much passion and support but unfortunately we’ve come to the conclusion that continuing development is not sustainable. We know this isn’t the news anyone wanted to hear and we genuinely share in your disappointment.”
Steel Hunters will shut down roughly seven months later and as an online-only game will become unplayable sometime “around October 8th.”
Here’s a timeline on what to expect while the game winds down its servers:
- Custom Games: In the coming weeks we’ll roll out custom game support so you can play with your friends set up community matches and create some final memories together.
- All Hunters Fully Unlocked: As a thank you for your dedication we’re unlocking every Hunter for all players with the new game mode – including Hunters nobody has seen yet. Try them out explore and have fun!
- Farewell Tournament: We’re also planning a goodbye tournament to celebrate your love for competition and the amazing community you’ve built. More details soon on Discord.
While it’s not as big of a drop off and a fast of a cancelation as Sony’s infamous multiplayer hero shooter Concord, it seems like Steel Hunters peaked with its launch and never recovered.
According to Steamdb stats, right at launch in early April Steel Hunters saw its highest player count around 4,479 concurrent players. From that point onwards it lost players until it went below 1,000 concurrent players by mid-April and never recovered. The game currently has less than 100 concurrent players.
