1 day In New York City: A Day in NYC
I’ve created a 1 day in New York City Itinerary that will cover some of my favorite parts of the city. It’s impossible to see all that NYC has to offer in a single day, but this itinerary will give you a brief of some of its most famous places, buildings, historic landmarks, and parks.
It’s a lot to cover in just one day, so use this blog post to outline your interests and make changes as necessary. I’ve included some other alternative options if you want to make any changes according to your travel style.
Your 1 day in New York City Itinerary will cover some highlights of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. It focuses on famous places in New York along with unique things to do in the city.
We’ll start the day on the other side of the river in the trendy Brooklyn neighborhood of DUMBO. From there, you’ll cross the iconic Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan and make your way up to Central Park.
You’ll see that this itinerary is packed with some of the best photo spots and attractions you can visit in NYC. So, let’s dive into the ultimate 1 day in New York City.
Itinerary For One Day In New York City
1 Day in New York City Itinerary Morning:Brooklyn Bridge & Financial District
7:00 AM: Brooklyn Bridge
Start your perfect 1 day in New York City in the neighborhood of DUMBO on the Brooklyn Side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Opened in 1883, the bridge is one of the most iconic symbols of NYC.
DUMBO, which stands for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”, is a trendy neighborhood located in Brooklyn. It has some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline, especially from the waterfront facing the East River. Take a stroll at Pebble Beach, and Brooklyn Bridge Park, and then make your way onto Brooklyn Bridge.

Pro Tip: I highly recommend starting your sightseeing as early as possible to make the most of your time in NYC. Visit the Brooklyn Bridge in the morning to catch the sunrise without crowds. You only have one day in New York city, so timing is crucial! Also, when you walk from the Brooklyn side to the Manhattan side, NYC skylines will be in front of you!
When you cross the bridge and approach the Manhattan side, you’ll be greeted by incredible views of the Manhattan Skylines. You’ll get some of the best photos from here.
8:30 AM: Coffee/Breakfast
After crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, you’ll arrive in the Financial District in Lower Manhattan, also known as FiDi and popular for Wall Street. But before that have breakfast at classic New York Diner.
Grab yourself a quintessential New York bagel and coffee. Ans thankfully options are abundant throughout the city, so take your pick! On the Manhattan side, try the famous Bagels from Leo’s Bagel or Liberty Bagel Wall Street.
9:00 AM: Explore Financial District
After a good breakfast and coffee, explore the heart of Lower Manhattan. Wall Street is home to some of the most significant financial institutions in the United States. Walk down the street and soak up the atmosphere, then check out some of the below sights in the area:
- New York Stock Exchange: The epicenter of global finance, where stocks are bought and sold. While the trading floor isn’t open to the public, have a look at the building itself, as it’s a very iconic landmark of the city.
- Trinity Church: This Gothic Revival church offers a great contrast to the bustling financial district.
- Charging Bull Statue: Snap a photo with this iconic bronze sculpture, a symbol of American financial aggression.

9:30 AM: World Trade Center Complex & Oculus
The original World Trade Center with its famous twin towers was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001. Today, the rebuilt World Trade Center site stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal on the same site as the original!
The main building of the 16-acre complex is One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. The area is composed of 5 iconic office towers, an 8-acre Memorial Plaza, over half a million square feet of shopping and dining, and The Transportation Hub (Oculus).

Here are the three major sights I recommend to visit:
- 9/11 Memorial: It is located in the footprints of the original Twin Towers. There, you’ll find waterfalls and panels inscribed with the names of the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks.it’s open to the public between 10 AM – 5 PM daily.
- 9/11 Museum: I highly recommend a visit to the museum to learn more about the events of that day. The exhibits are very well done and informative. It will be surely an emotional experience. Due to its popularity, make sure to buy your tickets in advance as you have just 1 day in New York city! The museum is open Thursday – Monday from 10 AM – 5 PM.
- Oculus: Just a short walk from the memorial, the Oculus is a must-see for architecture lovers like me. Also known as the Oculus Transportation Hub, this unique building was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It’s home to the Westfield shopping mall. Even if you don’t have time to shop, the Oculus’s design is worth stopping by for a photo opportunity! After all, it is one of the best photo spots in New York.

11:30 AM: Lunch at Chelsea Market
From the Oculus, consider taking UBER/LYFT or Subway to Chelsea Market. Walking will take so much time and with only one day in NYC, you must make the most of your time.
I seriously love to visit the markets and food halls wherever I’m traveling, be it Atlanta Ponce City Market or across the world in Borough Market, London.
Chelsea Market is a trendy food hall and shopping destination located in the historic old NABISCO factory where the Oreo was created. It is one of the best indoor food markets in New York City, with more than 40 eateries in one place! This is why this place is perfect for lunch during your one-day in New York City itinerary. Just wander around and pick up what looks good to you.
I recommend eating at these places in Chelsea Market:
- Miznon: Serves amazing Middle Eastern food.
- Los Tacos No. 1: Have authentic tacos!
- Fat Witch Bakery: try their amazing Brownies!
You can also pack your food and walk to Pier 57. It has a rooftop park that offers the best views of Little Island. Just enjoy your picnic lunch with relaxing views of the Manhattan Skylines.
1 Day New in York City Afternoon: Midtown Manhattan & Central Park
12:30 PM: Walk the High Line
New York City’s High Line is one of the unique places you can see during a one-day visit. This 1.45-mile-long old elevated freight rail line was built in the 1930s and later transformed into a park. It’s worth walking and experiencing during your visit!

You’ll arrive in Hudson Yards, another trendy upscale neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan. At your exit, just have a look at the massive The Vessel building. This honeycomb structure is one of the most iconic buildings in New York.
1:30 PM: Explore Central Park & 5th Avenue
No NYC itinerary is complete without Central Park. You’ve seen it in movies, and now you can experience it for yourself. So, in the afternoon, head to Central Park.
While it’s too big to explore entirely in an hour or two, if you plan smartly, you can still get most of its sights in time. The best way to see Central Park in a short amount of time is by bike. It’s super convenient and you can explore must-see sights with the limited time you have:
- Gapstow Bridge and the Pond
- Bethesda Terrace and Bethesda Fountain
- View from Cherry Hill over the Lake
- Bow Bridge
- Loeb Boathouse
After exploring Central Park, walk down New York’s Fifth Avenue. It’s among the most famous shopping streets in the world, packed with some of the most renowned storefronts and tourist sights!
3:00 PM: New York Public Library & Bryant Park
Next head to the New York Public Library, an iconic NYC landmark.
I love exploring bookstores and libraries around the world. New York Public Library is fascinating and you just can’t miss it. The New York Public Library houses over 50 million items, making it one of the largest libraries in the world.
Even if you aren’t a book lover, check out its Rose Main Reading Room. It’s free to visit and admire the stunning Gothic architecture.
While you’re there, stop by Bryant Park just outside the library. It’s a fantastic place to relax with a coffee. During Christmas in New York, the park transforms into a charming ice-skating rink.
4:00 PM: Grand Central Terminal & Tudor City Bridge
NYC’s Grand Central Terminal is probably the world’s most famous train terminal. Also known as Grand Central Station, it has been featured in countless movies and TV shows, and while you’re in the city you’ll need to see it!
The architecture of the terminal is stunning, especially the main concourse. One of my favorite features is the ceiling in the main concourse, which has over 2,500 stars. Also, don’t miss the famous four-faced clock on top of the info booth and the Whispering Gallery.
After exploring Grand Central Station, just walk a few minutes to Tudor City Bridge. This vantage point will give you amazing views of E 42nd Street. It’s even perfect for catching a sunset with Manhattan skylines. This is best to capture the iconic streets of New York City.
5:00 PM: Sunset from Observation Deck
With just 1 day in New York City, there is no brainer to catch the sunset from one of the many observatories in the city! You just can’t miss the chance to get a panoramic view of the Big Apple from your one day in New York City!

The city has several incredible observation decks. Here are five of the most popular decks:
But among all, my top choice is classic Top of the Rock. Because it offers the best views. You’ll get 360-degree views of Central Park, the iconic Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, and the entire Manhattan skyline, and doesn’t have glass barriers to obstruct your photos!
Whichever one you choose, just be sure to book your tickets in advance! The sunset time slots tend to sell out more regularly than the others.
If you visit Top of the Rock during the Christmas season, you’ll find an ice skating rink and the iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree – it’s gorgeous! Also, two major landmarks of NYC- Radio City Music Hall and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are also here.
OPTION 2:
If you prefer to visit the iconic Empire State Building instead of the Top of the Rock, it’s possible to include it in this one day NYC Itinerary as well.
For that, you’ll need to walk just 15 minutes from Grand Central Station to reach the Empire State Building. Needless to say, Empire State Building is also extremely popular and one of the iconic landmark of New York. I suggest booking the skip-the-line tickets in advance.
6:30 PM: Classic NYC Dinner: must do in 1 day in New York City
When you’re in New York, your choice here is New York Pizza for dinner. If you haven’t grabbed a classic Pizza Slice in New York, then this is your chance! Here are a few of my recommendations to grab classic NYC Pizza in the city.
- Joe’s Pizza (1435 Broadway)
- NY Pizza Suprema (413 8th Ave)
- Artichoke Basille’s Pizza (1410 Broadway)
If Pizza isn’t your thing, you can try local carts, restaurants, or burger joints in the city! There are so many places to eat in the city!

7:30 PM: Watch the Broadway Show
Your 1 day New York itinerary isn’t possible without mentioning Broadway. Even if you’re a fan of musicals, seeing a show at NYC’s theatre district is a must. It’s a quintessential New York experience and a vital part of the culture.
These shows are some of the best theatre productions in the world. I recommend booking your favorite show dates in advance, as they sell out quickly. Prices range A LOT for these depending heavily on critical acclaim, day of the week, and time
Pro Tip: If you don’t have a preference, you can get last-minute tickets the day of the performances from TKTS windows either in Times Square or at Lincoln Center.
Option 1: New York City River Cruise
If Broadway shows aren’t your thing, consider a Harbor Lights Night Cruise on the Hudson River. A nighttime cruise offers a unique perspective of the city skyline, all lit up against the night sky. You’ll see some of the most famous buildings in NYC, like the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, and One World Trade Center, from the water.
Pro Tip: If you’re traveling on a budget, you can also consider booking a water taxi instead of a tour. You can even book a free Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty from the water without stopping to get off on the little island
Option 2: Rooftop Bar
Enjoy a New York tradition and have some drinks in beautiful settings to enjoy the Manhattan Skylines at night from a rooftop bar. Nightlife in NYC is one of the best in the world, and there is no better place to enjoy it than one of the rooftop bars. Here are some special places in the Theater District:
- St. Cloud Rooftop Bar at Knickerbocker: on the 17th Floor – A luxury rooftop bar in the sky!
- M Social Rooftop Bar: Best in the heart of Times Square with stunning views.
- Magic Hour Rooftop Bar at Moxy Times Square: Multiple cocktail bars, carousel décor, live music, and stunning views.
- Bar 54: The top of the Hyatt Centric with river views.

10:00 PM: Times Square – Must visit for your 1 day in New York City
Last stop of the Day, Times Square. No trip to New York City would be complete without a visit to Times Square. It’s a must-do in the city that never sleeps! When you are here, you’ll see everything is just alive!
Times Square is one of the most famous symbols of NYC. It can be a bit overwhelming, and exciting, but wild! You’ll see huge crowds, street performers, LED billboards, lights, and where the ball drops on New Year’s Eve. It’s a great place to observe the city’s vibrant energy, people-watch, and take pictures.
Climb the Red TKTS Staircase to get a full view and photos. It’s just the perfect place to end your 1 day NYC Itinerary.
I also recommend a visit to Junior’s to have Cheesecake. It’s one of the best in the city after Eileen’s. It’s delicious and has multiple locations central to Times Square. Plus, they have a to-go counter where you can pick up a slice of cheesecake to go!
Junior’s remains open until 11 pm on Sundays and Mondays, midnight 12 AM on Tuesdays through Thursdays, and 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
Pro Tip: Do you know about the Midnight Moment at Times Square? If you’re there right before midnight, from 11:57 PM to midnight, the massive electronic billboards synchronize to showcase the digital artwork. It’s the world’s largest and longest-running digital public art program.
Where to stay on your 1 day In New York City
Best Time To Visit To New York City
I love New York all times of the year, but here are things to consider in your plans for your one day in NYC.
June to September are the most popular times to visit New York. The middle of the summer can get pretty hot! Also, the accommodations prices will be high.
Fall is perfect with temps in the 60’s and 70’ s Fahrenheit. And the crowds thin out a bit. It is perfect time to chase the fall foliage in the city.
November and December are very festive in New York. Lots of winter pop-up activities, decorations, and of course, the New Year’s Eve extravaganza! Check out my 4 day New York Christmas Itinerary.
February and March is lean season with snow and lower prices! Just warm up with layers, and snow shoes !

New York Travel Tips & Common Mistakes to Avoid
Visiting NYC in one day is a very ambitious goal, but with the right travel planning, you can maximize your experience! Here are some essential tips to navigate the Big Apple during your visit:
- Don’t try to walk everywhere: While you can walk from one attraction to the next, it will take lots of your time in your one day in NYC. Instead, opt for taxis, Uber, or Subway for longer distances to spend more time seeing the city.
- Use Public Transportation: Like other major cities in the world, NYC also has very efficient public transportation – Subway. You can pay your subway fare with your contactless credit/debit card, a MetroCard, or an OMNY card (a rechargeable, contactless fare payment system in NYC). Then use Google Maps to navigate the system. Remember to tap your card upon entering and exiting the station.
- Book NYC attractions in advance: Popular attractions in New York often have long lines. To maximize your time, book tickets for must-see sights like museums, observatories, or Broadway shows well in advance. This will help you to get better deals and ensure you don’t miss out on experiencing iconic landmarks. You can book tickets for NYC attractions on platforms like Viator and GetYourGuide.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Since your One Day in NYC itinerary has strategically placed some of the attractions in the same area together, you will walk a lot to maximize your time.
