Ford, Bernette. Uncle John’s City Garden. Illustrated by Frank Morrison. New York: Holiday House, 2022. 32 pp. Grades K–2.
An autobiographical story from Bernette Ford, Uncle John’s City Garden tells the tale of Bernette as a young girl visiting her uncle’s urban neighborhood and helping him as he and others from the neighborhood grow a community garden. The book is illustrated richly, showing the richness of the earth as it produces produce for the community. Bernette works alongside her Uncle John and her sister L’il Sissy towards a common goal, and this strengthened their bond as well as planted a love of farming in the two younger girls’ hearts. This is a great book to share with those interested in making a small difference right where they are, as well as young people who are interested in plant life. Reviewed by Meredith Ramella.
