Sideways Movie: Still Making a Splash on the Santa Ynez Valley
Join the journey as Monique Soltani visits the Santa Ynez Valley and sees the “Sideways Effect” first hand. Twenty years after the Oscar-winning film came out we discover that wine ripple is still making a big splash on this Santa Barbara County community!
The Santa Ynez Valley is home to more than 100 wineries, six distinct towns, four sub A-V-A’s, and California’s only east-west transverse mountain range.
This creates the Sideways effect that brings in the cool air from the pacific responsible for misty mornings, sunny afternoons, and crisp evenings. The perfect weather for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes!
Speaking of Sideways the Oscar-winning wine-lovers comedy was filmed all around these parts just over 20 years ago and you’ll find ties to Tinseltown here, everywhere you go.
Especially at the house built by one of Walt Disney’s favorite “human actors” Fess Parker Winery and Vineyard. Where we take a ride on the ranch with his granddaughter, Katie Parker.
Fans of the movie “Sideways” will also recognize this quaint small town as the backdrop for one of the film’s most iconic lines, delivered by Paul Giamatti’s character, ‘Miles.’
The Los Olivos Wine Merchant and Cafe where miles shared a few bottles with Maya, played by Virginia Madsen. Sideways nostalgia may get you in the door, but the farm-to-table experience will keep you coming back.
We go in the kitchen at The Hitching Post 2 which is literally the spot that inspired author Rex Pickett to set his novel, ‘Sideways’ in the world of wine.
After that it’s off to feeding Ostriches at Ostrichland USA. We close our episode with a sweet treat, traditional Danish pastry making in Solvang. Danish immigrants founded Solvang in the early 20th century and their traditions are what make this town.
