Destiny 2’s The Edge of Fate with Forced Mechanics and Technical Roadblocks

The latest installment in Bungie’s Destiny 2 expansion series, The Edge of Fate, has been out just a little over 24 hours, and, well, opinions among the players stand all over the place now. Many are loving the new story beats and gear while some others are ready to throw their controllers because of forced mechanics and technical roadblocks. Destiny 2’s official Twitter went berserk, asking players to rate the expansion between 1 and 5, whose responses were probably as chaotic as a Mojito match without heavy ammo. Going first-the good things. There were players who appreciated the story: CoachSki02 gave it either a 4 out of 5 or a straight four rating, citing the new feeling of Armor 3.0 and the story itself. Then there are those like MicolashIQ, who gave it a perfect score of 5 even though he docked it for the soundtrack… an absolute 1 out of 5. Ouch. The strongest points here seem to be the story as a fairly good number of players agree that Bungie’s writing team “really did a thing.”

On the opposite scale are all the complaints. And the louder they are. The chief complaint? MatterSpark. Ohhh, MatterSpark. From “annoying” to “the dumbest thing ever added to Destiny,” players have thrown everything at this new mechanic that has players rolling around repeatedly on the ground in a ball. Thanks4Speed stopped playing after being turned into a ball the 17th time. That’s a lot of forced rolling.

On and on would be an endless discussion of technical issues-AxelSkyly and Hanken84 said that it crashed, going worldwide, and bizarrely kicked users with the Xbox Series X. Meanwhile, the PS5 isn’t much behind on the glitches: audio glitches have almost rendered gameplay impossible for some; lucientweet stated that he or she “could barely hear anything” during a two-hour long gameplay.

And then, what about post-campaign grind? Or, as Tylerrandall05x put it: the lack thereof? “Farming encore for levels for the next 3 months is not how a new DLC should play,” summarizing the feeling that the endgame is already starting to wear thin.

So, where does that leave us? Mixed, really. The Edge of Fate is one of those expansions where enjoyment states simply depend on whatever you end up focusing on. Love story and don’t mind janky mechanics? You may actually be having fun. Can’t stand being forced into gimmicks and crashing? Wait for a patch by all means.

Bungie has got some fixing if they want to win back the players who are feeling burned. But hey, at the very least, the lore is lit. Even if the gameplay loop has got a few people questioning their life choices.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
