Manchester United are poised to benefit financially, with Real Madrid close to signing Benfica defender Alvaro Carreras.
The Spaniard signed for Benfica on loan from United in January 2024. The Portuguese giants triggered the option to buy the left-back for £5 million upfront last summer.
Carreras has since made immense progress. Madrid have now identified him as a top target, and negotiations are ongoing to secure a transfer agreement.
Benfica are holding out for his £43m release clause, but Madrid have shown openness to pay £38.5m for the left-back, as per A Bola. The remaining amount can be adjusted for other costs, such as the agent fee.
There is confidence from all parties that a deal will get done.
United look set to benefit from the transfer, having inserted a sell-on clause during Carreras’ sale.
As part of the deal, the club will receive 20 percent of any profit made from Carreras’ next move.
Hence, United stand to receive £6.7m if Madrid finalise the transfer of their former graduate.
The Red Devils faithful will probably be disappointed over the amount the club will gain.
United have a buy-back clause worth £17m for the left-back but have no plans of triggering it.
The club were fancied to do so last winter, but they ended up signing Patrick Dorgu from Lecce instead.
The Mancunian giants no longer require another solution at left wing-back, but questions ought to be raised about why Carreras was allowed to leave for such a low transfer fee.
The hierarchy should have at least inserted a 40 percent sell-on clause too. Regardless, the club look set to receive a windfall of £6.7m from Carreras’ move to the Bernabeu.
